This latest edition of the Alien franchise is a resurgence of form after the uneven Prometheus. It is also a worthy addition to the films that have come before. Alien: Covenant gets the mix of horror and suspense right and sets an atmospheric tone that helps to build tension. There is also enough subtext and questions under the surface to give the film the depth to transcend being mere popcorn fodder.

Michael Fassbender does double duty this time out and his android character poses most of the film’s questions on life and the meaning of. Non existentialists need not fear for those with less interest in large degrees of depth, there is still plenty of inventive gore and enough scare tactics to keep most audience members on edge.

Picking up where Prometheus left off, Alien: Covenant works well as a stand alone film as it doesn’t add all that much to the alien mythology. Most audiences will already have a large degree of familiarity with the ongoing storyline so that helps to streamline things this time out.

Atmospheric, creepy and dark, Alien: Covenant is not easy viewing (for those that don’t like horror) but it does provide a right old fright night for those that do.

Remakes are fraught with danger, especially if the source material is strong. They need to add something to the mix to be relevant, it’s not enough to just hope that few have seen the original. In 2006 Danish Director Susanne Bier brought After The Wedding to the big screen and it was very well received. It even garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film for that year.

The basic story revolves around an orphanage in India that is in danger of going broke and the actions needed to keep it afloat. These efforts are filtered through a number of family secrets and coloured by how people deal with grief and betrayal. Things unfold layer by layer by layer.

The stats of the new version look promising with a cast that includes heavyweights like Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams and Billy Crudup. The location for securing the needed funding has been changed to New York City and this emphasises the different worlds by contrasting Western opulence with the simplicity of India.

It’s in the human interaction when things go astray. The acting in this really lets it down. Moore is unusually shrill and over the top and Williams is disengaged and flat. There are a few scenes that work and engenders real pathos but they are sadly in the minority. Unfortunately mark this one down as lost in translation.

Thanks to Rialto Distribution we have five passes to give away to a special screening of After the Wedding starring Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore!

As if driven by an inescapable force, Isabel (Michelle Williams) has devoted her life to running an orphanage in a Calcutta slum. With funds running dry, a potential donor, who requires she travel from India to New York, to deliver a presentation in-person, contacts Isabel. At first balking at the demand of an uncommitted philanthropist, she relents, and travels to a city she deliberately hasn’t returned to in over two decades.

Once in New York, Isabel lands uncomfortably in the sites of the orphanage’s possible benefactor, Theresa Young (Julianne Moore), a multi-millionaire media mogul. From the glittering skyscraper where she runs her successful business, to the glorious Oyster Bay estate, where she lives happily with her artist husband, Oscar Carlson (Billy Crudup), 21-year-old daughter, Grace (Abby Quinn), and eight-year-old twins, Theo and Otto, Theresa’s life couldn’t appear to be more perfect. But appearances are only skin deep, and Isabel and Theresa have more in common than meets the eye.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

While Isabel thinks she’ll soon be returning to her beloved orphanage, Theresa has other plans. She insists Isabel attend Grace’s wedding at the family’s estate. The joyful event becomes a catalyst for a revelation that upends the lives of both women, and the people who love them most.

With the same quiet depth and intensity found in Ordinary People and Terms of Endearment, After the Wedding celebrates the complex, transformative power of the most primal of human connections, as well as the ever-expanding definition of what makes a family.

Based on the Academy Award nominated film by Susanne Bier, After the Wedding stars: Academy Award winner Julianne Moore (Bel Canto, Gloria), Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams (Venom, I Feel Pretty), Billy Crudup (Where’d You Go, Bernadette), Abby Quinn (Bumblebee, Good Girls Get High), and Alex Esola (Orange is the New Black, The Young Pope).

After the Wedding is releasing in Australian cinemas October 24, 2019.

To enter this great competition simply fallout the form below. Please note – these tickets are for a specific event only and can not be exchanged or refunded. The winners will need to be available on October 16 at 6:30pm in Brisbane to be able to attend this event at Palace James Street.

Set in California in the summer of 1979, Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning star in 20th Century Women, a richly multi-layered, humorous and heart-stirring love letter to the women who raise us and the times that shape us, from acclaimed writer/director Mike Mills (Beginners).

To help guide him through life, she enlists the help of the two women in their lives; Abbie (Gerwig), a free-spirited, punk-loving photographer living as a boarder in Dorothea’s home; and Julie (Fanning), a savvy and provocative teen.
