A new trailer for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ upcoming animated adventure “Zootopia 2” has launched and features an all-new original song, “Zoo,” performed by Shakira who returns as the voice of Zootopia’s biggest pop star, Gazelle.

In the trailer, audiences get a first look at brand-new characters and a hidden reptile population when rookie cops Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) come face-to-face with a mysterious pit viper, Gary De’Snake (voice of Academy Award®-winner Ke Huy Quan). The film is directed by the Oscar®-winning team of Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush and Byron Howard and produced by Yvett Merino.

“Zoo” music and lyrics are written by Ed Sheeran, Blake Slatkin and Shakira. The song is produced by Blake Slatkin, Alex (A.C.) Castillo, Shakira and Ed Sheeran. The single “Zoo” releases on Friday, October 10. The “Zootopia 2” score is composed by Academy Award®-winner Michael Giacchino and launches as a part of the full soundtrack on Friday, November 21, ahead of the film’s theatrical release on Thursday, November 27.

In addition to writing and producing the single “Zoo” with Shakira, Ed Sheeran and Blake Slatkin appear in “Zootopia 2” in special cameos as a pair of sheep named Ed Shearin and Baalake Lambkin.

“Zoo” will resonate with fans of the breakout anthem “Try Everything” featured in the original Oscar® winning film “Zootopia” released in 2016. “Try Everything” has been streamed 2.7 billion times worldwide to date.

The “Zootopia 2” voice cast is composed of an astounding pool of talent that also includes Andy Samberg (“Saturday Night Live”), David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck”), Macaulay Culkin (“American Horror Story”) and Brenda Song (“The Last Showgirl”) who appear as the Lynxleys, one of the most prominent families in Zootopia. Growing up, it was always fascinating to observe the different family dynamics at play amongst my friends and their parents. Some were liberal, some were conservative, but none were like the Roses. Made up of parental units, Ivy (Olivia Colman), a pot-smoking, wise-cracking gourmet chef Mom and a neurotic architect Father, Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch), who together make the most unconventional Pommie couple ever.

Their coming together was storybook and instantaneous, their tip into separation and animosities slow and grinding. Theo, through a building project disaster, loses his job and reputation and retires to raise their two children. At the same time, Ivy scales the heights, running a restaurant that becomes wildly successful and expands to become a thriving chain of locations.

The animosity that builds between the couple is played mostly for laughs, but the vitriol that lies underneath is caustic and pries them apart. Their surrealistic life is not tethered to reality when they are around their friends, either, as they are a very odd mob. Nothing phases best mate Barry (Andy Samberg), whose advice is comical at best and his partner Amy (the under-utilised Kate McKinnon) is hard to pin down.

Most of the humour resides in the combative banter between Ivy and Theo, and while not all the jokes hit their mark, they are consistently amusing. The detachment of the reality of their ultra-entitled lifestyle and money-fuelled existence is there and provides more comic fodder. The good fun is there, but is slightly marred by a lack of chemistry between the two leads as that relationship prevents the good from being great.

It was littered with mildly funny gags referencing classic horror films, blended with a modern yet ironically timeless grrrl power theme about a grown-up daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez), rebelling against her old fashioned father, Dracula (Adam Sandler), for her right to make her own way in the big bad world. Drac also has to learn to accept Mavis’ choice of partner; in this case, a normal human, Jonathan (Andy Samberg). Hotel Transylvania 2 goes one step further in this ethos and this turns out to be a tiny step too far.

This time around old-fashioned Drac applies his preconceived expectations on his grandson and struggles to accept his new normy in-laws. Anxious that his grandson will be normal not monster, Drac and his monster buddies strongly encourage the tyke towards the latter with predictably goofy results. With typical sequelitis symptoms, the film reruns much of the same sentiment as its predecessor and feels correspondingly stale.

The film does feature a villain but he doesn’t come into effect until the final act and is, naturally, despatched by the end of the final act, so there is little tension created through the bulk of the film.

With no significant new characters introduced – the grandson isn’t so much a character as a McGuffin for Drac to bounce off – the film relies solely on it’s new plot which is lite in tone and content. As a result, the movie feels distinctly episodic rather than a standalone feature film. Straight to home video would have been more appropriate than a cinematic release.
