Having recently seen Wicked as a musical theatre event, it’s great to say that the movie version is even more spectacular. It’s old-school-style cinema at its best. With lavish sets and fabulous costume and makeup design, it looks amazing. Add a cast that features singers that can act as opposed to actors that can sing and it’s a feast for the ears as well.

Most will be familiar with the tie-in with The Wizard Of Oz as it’s set in the Land of Oz before events that take place in the original movie. It tells the life and death story (in two parts) of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, played by Tony Award-winning singer/actor/songwriter Cynthia Erivo. Pop princess Ariana Grande plays her frienemie Glinda in a role that provides most of the film’s comic moments.

Being loosely based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, the work is a welcome return to the massive productions of yesteryear albeit one mixed with modern-day sensibilities in regards to inclusivity and more natural acting styles. The filmmakers also use modern technology to great effect with some rather scary scenes featuring CGI characters.

While it should be a delight to all members of the family, the very youngest might be a bit frightened by some of the more intense moments, especially if they see monkeys as just playful and happy creatures. Also see it early if you can as the Uber fans will flock to those screenings and their energy and approach to fancy dress is a lot of fun to be around.

After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.

Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.

The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.

The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).

With writer L. Frank Baum and illustrator W. W. Denslow’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz being released in 1900, the MGM film in 1939 and the Broadway musical Wicked hitting the boards in 2003, the story of the wonderful world of Oz has had an amazingly consistent run. Almost everyone has a memory of some element from the Land of Oz.

Setting the timelines of Wicked before and after the events in the film was a masterstroke and opens up the storylines substantially. We discover that Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West played by Sheridan Adams didn’t start out so wicked and that Glinda the Good (Courtney Monsma) wasn’t always so good. Even the Great Oz is given more stick as being the fraud he is.

This Australian production of Wicked is immense. Eugene Lee’s set design is spectacular and the musical elements are impressive. In every scene, there are multiple elements to focus on and QPAC’s Lyric Theatre was fully alive with song and dance. The athleticism of the cast members was also onl display, with a special mention going to the actors playing the flying monkeys.

There is a palpable energy that only the live theatre can summon up and Wicked uses this power to the point of overload. There is an intensity that will translate well to audience members of all ages. This musical supplies an optimum opportunity to introduce the little ones to the joy and adventure that can take place in the arena of live theatre.

Wicked is now playing at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, Brisbane until November 24, 2024 – get your tickets now!

WICKED Australia Co-producer John Frost said, “I’m thrilled we’re able to bring WICKED to Brisbane’s wonderful Lyric Theatre where two past seasons totally sold out. WICKED is one of the most lavish musical productions to have ever played in Australia, the full Broadway experience. With the lavish sets and opulent costumes, it’s a feast for the eye and the ear.

“The new Australian cast is exceptional and has been embraced by WICKED fans. If you have never seen WICKED, come and see it for the first time and be spellbound. If you have seen it before, I know you’ll want to come back and be enthralled all over again.”

The other is bubbly, blonde, ambitious and exceptionally popular. They become rivals, then friends…until the world decides to call one “good” and the other one “wicked.”

The musical has played in 16 countries around the world including Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, The Philippines, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, and has been translated into six languages. WICKED is now the 4th longest running show in Broadway history.

The novel Wicked by Gregory Maguire, published in 1995, has sold 5.5 million copies, with 5 million of those sold since 2003 when the musical opened. Buoyed by the musical’s success, the novel has appeared on bestseller lists for close to two decades since its initial publication.

“A magical Broadway musical with BRAINS, HEART and COURAGE” – Time Magazine
“WICKED’s production values are exceptional. A POWERFUL PIECE OF THEATRE” – The Australian
“A SPECTACULAR ENTERTAINMENT with deep emotions and a serious message” – The Tokyo
“If every musical had the brains, heart and courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place” – Time Magazine
“WICKED is splendiferous as ever! The show works because it explores the complexity of moral choices and the prices we have to pay for making them. It’s a reminder of how musicals can support complex stories when you have a book writer of the quality of Winnie Holzman, great songs by Stephen Schwartz and a rich, visually splendiferous production, as directed by Joe Mantello. And, of course, the green girl and the blonde girl, as they refer to each other, are everyperson figures. We’re all either one or the other.” – Chicago Tribune

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman. The production features musical staging by Wayne Cilento with original direction by Joe Mantello.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.

Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.

Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.
