Set against the near-complete global breakdown among certain warring nations (not unlike elements of the current world situation), Steven continues to answer the big questions in a way only Spielberg can. He returns to the age-old question: Is there life on other planets? In this entertaining romp. His craft remains peerless, and his alien ideas are as kooky as ever
.

The main theme is a well-used one, that aliens have been visiting Earth for decades, and the truth is being kept from the public by the US government and in a slight departure, aided this time by an evil multinational corporation. Curiously, Spielberg’s approach highlights only modern events and completely ignores those other alien breeding grounds like the Egyptian and both the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. Too much of a good thing, I guess.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The structure of the film is based around a whistleblower arc and plays out in quite a thrilling manner. The alien technology that backs up the main chase is as outrageous as all the other efforts in this genre, but that does little to distract from the fun. Steven even finds a line of biblical scripture that reinforces the belief in life on other planets. It’s all based in a fantasy land and reinforces the truth that we humans will probably never know the accurate details.

Unfortunately, there are times that the director just can’t help himself, and the final few minutes seem completely unnecessary. It once again feels like he lacks complete trust in his audience and has to overstate the main theme to make sure everyone gets it. The almost complete grasp of his craft makes these moments so unnecessary. That distraction aside, Disclosure Day is a lot of fun and raises more questions than it does answers about those little grey men.

We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.

Universal Pictures is proud to release a new original event film created and directed by Steven Spielberg. The film stars SAG winner and Oscar® nominee Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor (Challengers, The Crown), Oscar® winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman franchise), Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, The Perfect Couple) and two-time Oscar® nominee Colman Domingo (Sing Sing, Rustin).

Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp, whose previous work with Spielberg includes the scripts for Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Combined, those films earned more than $3 billion worldwide. Koepp also wrote the script for this 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth.

Rare in the science fiction genre is the film that features a more empathetic approach to the end of the world as humankind knows it. It usually starts with doom and gloom and has a singular heroic alpha male swoop in and save the day (and earth along with it). Project Hail Mary is not that kind of film, and it is more entertaining because of its departure from the norm.

Intentionally disorienting from its opening scene. It takes you mid-film and then stretches out in both directions from there. You are introduced to a bearded and dishevelled Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), surrounded by technology that is a mystery to him. As his wits return, he discovers he is alone and on a spaceship in the outer regions of the universe.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

As the non-linear storyline progresses, you discover Ryland was at one time a lowly high school science teacher during a time of an impending cataclysmic event. The Earth’s Sun is being attacked and drained of its power by an alien organism, and he is an expert in the field. His aw-shucks nature puts him at odds with the scientific community, but his innate genius causes them to begrudgingly accept him into the fold.

To comment further on the storyline would rob the viewer of the upcoming surprises and blunt the joy of discovery. The departure from the traditional hero narrative remains and reinforces the sense that there is greatness in opening your mind to the plight of others. Using Andy Weir’s 2021 science fiction novel of the same name as source material, this cinematic take stays true to Weir’s sensibilities if not his actual words.

Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp, whose previous work with Spielberg includes the scripts for Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Few, if any, reboots have been as successfully realised as Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands. It is filled with amazing imagery amid a strong storyline and even sticks the landing with a finish that is emotionally satisfying. The imagination at play is particularly relevant with the creation of a planet that is rife with a real sense of peril to the main protagonists.

Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) is a young predator who leaves his planet, Yautja Prime, to travel to the planet Genna to hunt the Kalisk. His departure is emotionally charged after his brother Kwei is killed by his father Nihorr for disobeying his father’s orders. The Kalisk is supposed to be unkillable, so Dek has his work cut out for him.

// ]]>
// ]]>

During his travels, he comes in contact with Thia (Elle Fanning), a synthetic sent to the planet by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. The same company known in the Alien world. The planet Genna is filled with real risk as both flora and fauna are deadly and ultra-aggressive in ending the lives of any creature brave enough to land on there. It makes Dek’s journey all the more dangerous.

The film’s great strength is the seamless integration of all its components. Dek stays true to the Yautja Clan’s code of battle and honour, but there are traces of humanity that creep in and give the audience a chance to sympathise with him and not see his behaviour as one-dimensional. Trachtenberg shows a true love of the Predator world, and his tasteful approach bodes well for future releases.
