Set against the near-complete global breakdown among certain warring nations (not unlike elements of the current world situation), Steven continues to answer the big questions in a way only Spielberg can. He returns to the age-old question: Is there life on other planets? In this entertaining romp. His craft remains peerless, and his alien ideas are as kooky as ever
.

The main theme is a well-used one, that aliens have been visiting Earth for decades, and the truth is being kept from the public by the US government and in a slight departure, aided this time by an evil multinational corporation. Curiously, Spielberg’s approach highlights only modern events and completely ignores those other alien breeding grounds like the Egyptian and both the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. Too much of a good thing, I guess.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The structure of the film is based around a whistleblower arc and plays out in quite a thrilling manner. The alien technology that backs up the main chase is as outrageous as all the other efforts in this genre, but that does little to distract from the fun. Steven even finds a line of biblical scripture that reinforces the belief in life on other planets. It’s all based in a fantasy land and reinforces the truth that we humans will probably never know the accurate details.

Unfortunately, there are times that the director just can’t help himself, and the final few minutes seem completely unnecessary. It once again feels like he lacks complete trust in his audience and has to overstate the main theme to make sure everyone gets it. The almost complete grasp of his craft makes these moments so unnecessary. That distraction aside, Disclosure Day is a lot of fun and raises more questions than it does answers about those little grey men.

Being born with synesthesia (the ability to see music as colours) and possessing perfect pitch, Lionel (Leo Cocovinis/Paul Mescal/Chris Cooper) is destined for a life in music. Those abilities also give him the opportunity to leave the tiny house he has spent his entire life in. One that is located in a small rural town in Kentucky.

He starts his musical journey by enrolling at The Boston Conservatory after being recommended by a local music teacher. Once there, he meets David (Josh O’Connor). They bond over a shared love of indigenous folk music and soon develop a physical relationship. It is one of discovery.

This is soon interrupted by David’s enlistment in the army and then departing to fight in the trenches in World War I. When David returns, he and Lionel reconnect and end up travelling around rural areas in the South documenting the local music by recording it on one of Thomas Edison’s early phonographs. They remain close, but the war has changed David, and they soon drift apart.

The rest of the film follows the intricacies of Lionel’s life journey. We come to learn he is a bit of a narcissist and makes selfish life decisions, easily discarding romantic partners, both male and female. It also speaks of the power of a good story that we are kept enthralled by Lionel’s life, even with all of his less-than-stellar actions.

When you’re hot, you’re hot. Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman has amassed quite the film and television resume in her short career. She’s been in some of the top-grossing films of the last decade and has real career momentum. She also has the successful side hustle of being a pop star and fashion icon. With this in the background, we now have the film Challengers.

Using the sport of tennis as a backdrop, Challengers ramps up the drama between Zendaya and her two friends Patrick Zweig played by Josh O’Connor best known as Prince Charles in the TV series The Crown and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist who played Riff in 2021’s West Side Story). The three make quite the power trio but as the story evolves and more information becomes available you realise the power is held by just one.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

It’s a testament to Zendaya’s increasing skill of craft that even though her manipulations of these two boys (who never quite grown up to be adults) are complete, you still find her interesting and not so easy to dismiss outright. Her agenda is one of self-advancement and as more facts drip from the faucet you realise that she holds all of the power over these two more than willing dupes.

The sport of tennis is presented in an almost stomach-turning way as the camera is constantly in motion and supplemented by computer graphics that keep the plane of perspective ever elusive. It also successfully masks the fact that they can’t actually play world-class tennis. The film score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is forceful in the extreme. This highly stylised take on Tennis with its throbbing soundtrack gives teen angst a path to extend into young adulthood and provides another successful route for Zendaya to do her thing.
