Through a rather contrived circumstance, Dora and some of her classmates are kidnapped and transported to the jungle to help find her missing parents, who are on quest to find a lost city of gold. The film then turns into a trek through the jungle action yarn with a few surprises.

The best of these is a scene where the airborne spores from a patch of giant flowers dose the group and during their hallucinations turns them into the original cartoon characters. It is imaginative and quite funny. Might take a little expanding to the little ones though.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold replaces the education elements of the animated series with the wonder of the real world, with a bit of magic thrown in for good measure. If this approach instills in the kids a sense of wonderment in the actual outdoors, it can be considered a success.

Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) are a married couple that are unable to conceive and decide to go down the adoption road. During this journey they come in contact with the oddest of odd couple adoption agents Karen (Octavia Spencer) and Sharon (Tig Notaro). The two agent’s yin and yang together is hilarious.

They end up adopting three children (from the same dysfunctional family) that range in age from very young to the teen years. This age gap yields most of the laughs but also makes most of the film’s social points. The comments it makes about what the adoption industry actually is are revealing.

In large parts very funny, the film touches upon a number of universal truths but delivers them in such a way that it never becomes preachy. With a well paced and intelligently written script. Instant family is a heartfelt comedy that makes you think as much as you laugh.

When the US government decides to treat the Cartels that run the Mexican underworld as domestic terrorists, they hatch a plan to create chaos by starting a war between rivals overlords. In steps Alejandro and Matt as the government bad asses to get the job done.

A usual with these things, not all goes according to plan and as the problems escalate, the film loses a bit of focus. There is a kidnapping and then a moment of morality that changes the outcome for everyone. Things don’t really coalesce until the end of the last reel.

Border politics between the two neighbouring nations has always been a murky affair and Sicario: Day of the Soldado does its best to reflect that. With an ominous film score that is consistently unsettling and the changing dynamics of US policy in the film and world at large, things are on edge throughout. It’s a dark journey but one worth taking.

In SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO, the series begins a new chapter. In the drug war, there are no rules – and when the US government begins to suspect that cartels have started trafficking terrorists across the US border, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) calls on the mysterious Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), whose family was murdered by a cartel kingpin, to escalate the war in nefarious ways. Alejandro kidnaps the kingpin’s daughter to inflame the conflict – but when the girl is seen as collateral damage, her fate will come between the two men as they question everything they are fighting for.
