In the early eighties, the musician Bruce Springsteen and his career were at a crossroads. He had strong career momentum with the success of his Born To Run album in 1975 and The River in 1980, but he was far from a happy man. He was struggling, and those were the days when people’s mental health was not a comfortable topic of conversation.

He felt he had something dark and deeply personal to share with his audience, and this set of songs eventually became the album Nebraska. It was unconventionally recorded (at home in his bedroom and onto a cassette recorder) and presented to his record label with instructions to release no singles and with no touring to support it. In a nod to his and manager Jon Landau’s power, the label went against their strong sense of self-interest and complied.

This story is presented in a bleak manner that strays far from overstatement and relies heavily on its excellent cast. Of particular note is Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) as Bruce; he gets the nuances just right, and his emotive expressions say so much while presenting so little. The support cast of Jeremy Strong as Landau, Odessa Young as on and off girlfriend Faye Romano and Stephen Graham as Springsteen’s abusive and troubled father, who also suffered from mental health issues, are superlative.

While not being particularly fun to watch, the emotions on display are raw and feel real, and its underlying message of acknowledging and looking after one’s mental health is an important one. We are slowly making progress in that struggle, and works like this will help to keep that dialogue alive, but keep in mind that this is also a very effective piece of storytelling. One that features amazing performances and exceptional technical execution.

The all-new feature film, 20th Century Studios’ “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,” chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 “Nebraska” album, a raw, haunted acoustic record that marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works.

Director Scott Cooper, who wrote the script for the screen based on the book “Deliver Me from Nowhere” by Warren Zanes, said, “Making ‘Springsteen’ was deeply moving as it allowed me to step inside the soul of an artist I’ve long admired – and to witness, up close, the vulnerability and strength behind his music. The experience felt like a journey through memory, myth, and truth. And more than anything, it was a privilege to translate that raw emotional honesty to the screen, and in doing so, it changed me. I cannot thank Bruce and Jon Landau enough for allowing me to tell their story.”

From 20th Century Studios, “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 “Nebraska” album when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past. Recorded on a 4-track recorder in Springsteen’s New Jersey bedroom, the album marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works—a raw, haunted acoustic record populated by lost souls searching for a reason to believe.

Thatcher’s England of the eighties brought to life some harsh realities and truths still evident today in regards to Britain’s often times difficult relationship with immigration. Set against this troublesome backdrop is a tale about family, fitting in and The Boss, Bruce Springsteen.

How a Pakistani boy from Luton (located in the south east of England) becomes enamoured with the musical icon from New Jersey underlines the story. A story very loosely based on the life of Sarfraz Manzoor, a British journalist and broadcaster who wrote the book Greetings from Bury Park.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Javed (Viveik Kalra) is a young man torn between two worlds. One side sees him as a dutiful son in a traditional Pakistani family while the other side sees him yearning to be more than just his upbringing and embrace the west. The film takes musical flights of fantasy often and it’s clever in the way it presents the lyrics and music of Bruce Springsteen.

For such a heavy time, the film is light entertainment. It makes its message with a subtle touch, not the sledge hammer approach and in that way it’s quite entertaining. Music is the universal language and often speaks to the better part of ourselves. Blinded By The Light is a heart-warming example of that.

Admitting to not having a place in your listening habits for a known star and media darling can be a double-edged proposition.

For lovers of underground music, it’s a virtue but for fans of the main stream, it leaves a gap in your record collection to play requests. The artist is question this time is Bruce Springsteen. He has never been a featured artist in this abode as his voice has always underwhelmed. His song writing chops are of course admirable but that voice. He’s also just too American, too accessible.

When word developed of him releasing an album featuring ex-Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, it perked interest. How would such an iconoclastic practitioner of sonic noise meld with one of the most grits and gravy of artists? The album’s odd and sods leftovers nature also provided an addition as maybe the bold statement would be toned down this time.

Well for this listener there is good news and some that is less so. Morello’s influence can be felt with a slightly more experimental approach to song selection (this could also be the result of the work’s stated intent of clearing out the back log). The album works best with tracks like Heaven’s Wall and The Ghost Of Tom Joad where Morello’s crazy menagerie of guitar tones jump out of what are fairly dense mixes. It’s a welcome bit of the avant garde. Elsewhere it’s mostly simular fare to what has come before. There are the earnest slow tempo statements and the big bold party anthems.

A strange thing has happened though, with so may attempts to find a place for this work in the collection, it has grown in acceptability and during certain tracks even provides musical escape. For non-fans of ‘The Boss’ High Hopes might just provide the ideal starting point.
