While most men deal with their mid-life crises with the purchase of an expensive sports car or an extravagant vacation, Eric (Rob Brydon) side-steps those cliches and joins a male synchronised swim team. This unlikely scenario is brought to pleasant fruition in Swimming with Men.

Comedian/actor Brydon has the perfect face to translate the boredom and uncertainty of his middle years. He lets things get out of control at home and ends up leaving his wife Heather (Jane Horrocks) and son Billy (Spike White). He is also frustrated with his repetitive work as an accountant.

While the overall theme of the film may seem slight on paper, on-screen, the results are very charming albeit in a very British way. Eric’s underwater friends all have their own individual stories and the movie delightfully fills in the finer details as things progress.

While there is no hard focus on any of the character’s actions and the script uses words sparingly, it is refreshing to not have everything explained to you via large chunks of verbal exposition. It’s a unique take on the subject matter and joyfully ends with a splendidly absurd dance number.

Inspired by the 2010 documentary, Men Who Swim, SWIMMING WITH MEN tells the story of Eric (Rob Brydon), an accountant in the throes of a mid-life crisis, who eventually finds new meaning to his life as part of an all-male, middle-aged amateur synchronised swimming team. The ramshackle squad slowly learn to reveal their inner lives, as well as their paunches and together they make a bid to compete at the Unofficial Male Synch-Swimming World Championships.

With a talented British cast that includes Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous), Rupert Graves (TV’s Sherlock) and Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) SWIMMING WITH MEN is a delightful comedy that tips its (swimming) cap at beloved British films such as The Full Monty and Calendar Girls.

Rob Brydon, charming Welshman, and cult comedy television superstar from hits The Trip, Gavin & Stacey and Would I Lie To You?, is bringing his brand new live show, I Am Standing Up, to Australian theatres in March 2019.

The Swansea-born radio and TV presenter got his big break in 2000 with Marion and Geoff, the series of short comedy monologues on BBC2. He is perhaps best known for his role of Bryn West in the sitcom Gavin & Stacey and the BBC One hit comedy panel show Would I Lie To You? His film credits include Swimming With Men, Early Man, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Cinderella and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

But stand-up comedy is where Brydon is in his element – the perfect mix of charm and wry asides. Rob Brydon’s ad-libs, audience repartee and improvisations are a masterclass in clever comedy and he has been compared to the skill of the likes of Barry Humphries. A gifted impressionist, Rob woos his live crowds with uncanny impressions of everyone from Tom Jones, Bill Clinton, Michael Caine and even his The Trip co-star Steve Coogan.

In an often cynical, sometimes harsh world, Brydon delivers big hearted laughs and sell out runs on London’s West End. Don’t miss the chance to see why when one of the world’s best performs in Australia for the first time!
