In this genre, there’s nothing scarier to the audience than encountering an apex predator, one of the sea’s most magnificent creatures, the great white shark.”

Starring Australian actors Teressa Liane (Neighbours, The Vampire Diaries), Ann Truong (Cowboy Bebop, Strike Back), Kate Lister (Unhinged, Fox Trap) and newcomer Saskia Archer, the story follows four girlfriends on a kayaking and diving adventure that goes horribly wrong, and draws on themes of resilience, healing from trauma and strength in sisterhood and female friendship.

In the tradition of 47 Metres Down, The Shallows, and like its predecessor, THE REEF: STALKED plays with our most primal fear of the deep, being eaten alive and of terrifying predators lurking unseen somewhere below.

The voracious appetite for genre thrillers has Thrills & Spills producing partners Michael Robertson and Neal Kingston on their toes and happy to keep audiences well fed. “We’re excited to be filming The Reef: Stalked in the same week Great White hits the cinemas in Australia and with our new partnership with Filmology Finance, we plan to bring many more thrills to the theatres and the fans.”

THE REEF: STALKED is produced by Thrills & Spills and financed by Filmology Finance, with world sales (excluding Australia/New Zealand) handled by AMP International. The film is slated for release in 2022.

The following statement is issued jointly on behalf of Australian cinemas and film distributors by the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (MPDAA), National Association of Cinema Operators (NACO), Australian Independent Distributors Association (AIDA) and Independent Cinemas Australia (ICA).

“As an industry, we have been deeply saddened, like all Australians and many people around the world, by the bushfires ravaging our country. The loss of lives, wildlife, homes and land is heart-breaking, and our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted.

We send our sincere thanks to all the firefighters, volunteers, defence personnel, charities, organisations and communities who are working tirelessly to protect and support fire-affected Australians. We gratefully acknowledge the contribution of those who have donated their time, money and resources.

We want to help, so on Sunday, 19th January, we will be donating $2 from every movie ticket sold at participating cinemas to bushfire relief.

100% of the proceeds will be shared across three Australian charities doing incredible work in fire-affected communities:

Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal – providing immediate emotional and material support to firefighters, volunteers and evacuees;

Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery – supporting thousands of people in evacuation centres and recovery hubs across the country, and the;

RSPCA Bushfire Appeal – protecting animals in threatened or affected areas and long-term rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

Most cinemas in Australia will be participating in this campaign, and some may have tickets for January 19 on sale days in advance.

Red Hill Cinemas is the latest project from the Sourris brothers, Stephen and Peter, whose family have been putting the fun into movies for three generations and after acquiring the site in 2017, the final touches are being done.

Located at 14 Enoggera Terrace, the site was originally ‘Pop’s Picture Palace’ back in the 1920s, and remained that way until the mid-sixties, when it was converted into Teen City, a youth club that hosted acts like Col Joye and The Bee Gees.

It was converted into Red Hill Skate Arena in 1965 and stayed that way until it burnt down in 2002, making headlines across the state with many people holding great memories of the location.

Since that time, the building remained derelict, attracting a host of graffiti artists to its inner walls, and it is the families’ connection to the site, plus their love of Brisbane, that has resulted in a host of innovations at the new cinema.

The Red Hill Cinema site also has a sentimental value for the family, as the brothers’ great-uncle owned the building when it was a cinema in the 1950s.

The new Red Hill Cinemas will feature:

• Four premium Gold Room cinemas, all with plush, leather reclining chairs
• They will accommodate 70 patrons each, with food and drink delivered to your seat
• One traditional 160 seat cinema with leather seats featuring plenty of leg room and perfect viewing angles
• All cinemas will feature 4K projection and the latest in surround sound technology
• All cinemas are fully licensed, serviced by a fully operational kitchen with made-to-order meals

There has been a long list of recycling, heritage and environmental innovations at the new complex during the fit out, some of which will surprise you.

“It was always important to us to pay respect to the site,” Stephen said. “For example, the plant stand that is fixed above the candy bar was the ladder that used to go up to the projection booth.

“We’ve also got some canvas chairs in the foyer area which we sourced online that were originally in a cinema in Gayndah, and there are many other classic cinema artefacts around the place from our family collection.

“We’ve retained all the graffiti where possible, as many of the artists that sprayed the derelict site are now known around the world for their art, such as Sofles and Drapl, plus we have touches such as timber flooring that has been recycled from the lanes of a bowling alley, plus many of the timbers from the original structure that survived the fire now make up the ceiling for the lower area of the building,” he said.

“As a family, we’ve all grown up in Brisbane and we feel it’s important to retain the heritage of the building as much as possible, as a legacy for our customers and all Queenslanders.”

You can’t miss the cinema, as the artwork outside features a nod to the old Pop’s Picture Palace, along with stars of the golden age of Hollywood, such as Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, Mickey Mouse and Audrey Hepburn.

The Sourris family has had a history in Brisbane cinema for over a century, when the brothers’ grandfather moved from Greece in the early 1900s and set up cinemas in several locations. Their father James continued the legacy, building the Yatala Drive-in, and the family started the Five Star chain, which also includes cinemas in New Farm and the Elizabeth Picture Theatre in the Brisbane CBD.

Stephen grew up surrounded by a love for movies and wants to continue to offer his customers something more than just seeing a movie. It’s no surprise his favourite movie is Cinema Paradiso.

“We live in an era where everyone has streaming services at home for entertainment, but we believe that going to the movies should still be a special night out,” Stephen said.

“Whether it’s a date night, a movie with your kids or grandkids, or just with friends, I still, to this day, want people to feel that they are having a real night out.

“Going to the movies should be an experience to be savoured, and we hope that Red Hill Cinemas ticks every box for Brisbane moviegoers.”

The film follows two young British soldiers (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay; Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) on a single day at the height of World War I.

Joining MacKay and Chapman are Mark Strong (The Imitation Game, Zero Dark Thirty), Andrew Scott (Spectre, Sherlock), Richard Madden (BBC’s Bodyguard, Cinderella), Daniel Mays (Fisherman’s Friends, Rogue One), Adrian Scarborough (The Madness of King George, Christopher Robin), Jamie Parker (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), Nabhaan Rizwan (Informer), Claire Duburcq, with Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, the Bridget Jones franchise) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Doctor Strange).

Mendes, who will direct and wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Penny Dreadful) produces the filmwith Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Away We Go)—his partner at Neal Street Productions—along with Jayne-Ann Tenggren (Spectre, the upcoming The Rhythm Section) and Callum McDougall (Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall). Co-producing is Michael Lerman. The film will begin principal photography next week, shooting on location in England and Scotland.

The creative team helping to bring this story to the screen includes cinematographer Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049, Skyfall); production designer Dennis Gassner (Bugsy, Road to Perdition); costume designer Jacqueline Durran (Anna Karenina, Darkest Hour); editor Lee Smith (Dunkirk, The Dark Knight); and composer Thomas Newman, who has created the scores for six previous Mendes films, including Skyfall, Road to Perdition and American Beauty.

The film is being produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures and Universal Pictures, and will be released in the US by Universal Pictures on December 25, 2019. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.

1917 marks a reunion for Mendes and DreamWorks Pictures. The British director made his first feature, American Beauty, under the DreamWorks label, followed by two other productions—Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road.
