It’s been over twenty years since that last cinematic effort and the ensuing two decades plus of CGI advancement has led to a much richer palette this time. It’s to the filmmaker’s credit that they have developed a script that puts character development on equal terms with the computer-generated effects.

Engineered to bring the role players out of the house and into the cinema, this film version of DnD works hard at establishing character skins you would want to inhabit. The strong heroic type, the kick-ass female or the powerful wizard are just a few on display and the appeal is spread throughout the cast.

From the hammy bad guy played by Hugh Grant to the truly scary evil red witch Sofina (Daisy Head) to the bold heroine Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), it is the ensemble cast that holds the picture together. The spectacular special effects are just the icing on the cake.
