Saint Judy tells the inspirational true story of immigration attorney Judy Wood and her fight that changed American asylum law forever.

In her first case, Judy represents a woman forced to flee her home country after being persecuted by the Taliban for opening a school for girls. While juggling her life as a single mother, Judy fights tenacious battles in and out of court, not only saving her client’s life, but changing the Law of Asylum in the United States.

This case has saved the lives of thousands of other persecuted women around the world. Like ERIN BROCKOVICH, SAINT JUDY tells the story of a remarkable woman who overcame tremendous odds, and reminds us how one person can change the world.

Saint Judy will be released in Australian cinemas August 20.

Honorably discharged Special Ops soldier Pete Koslow’s (Joel Kinnaman) world is turned upside-down when he is jailed after a fight to protect his wife (Ana de Armas).

He’s given a chance for early release by becoming an informant for the FBI (Academy Award nominees Rosamund Pike and Clive Owen) and using his covert skills in an operation to take down The General, the most powerful crime boss in New York.

But when the FBI sting meant to finally earn Koslow his freedom results in the death of an undercover NYPD cop, Koslow finds himself caught in the crossfire between the mob and the FBI.

The General insists Koslow takes the heat and sends him back to prison to spearhead a drug operation from inside, and the FBI affirms that going back to jail to do The General’s bidding is the only way for Koslow to keep his deal with them alive.

Caught in a world of impossible choices, Koslow must return to prison, where he formulates a plan to escape the clutches of three of New York City’s most powerful organizations – the mob, the NYPD and the FBI – in order to save himself and his family.

The Informer is coming to cinemas soon.

There are a few different ways to view Hunter Killer, try it with the logical side of the brain and its implausibilities and stilted dialogue will get the best of you, but relax and just let the crazy mix of military might and alpha male integrity wash over you and a good time will be had.

The story revolves around a high-tech American submarine and its principled Captain, Joe Glass, played with his usual swagger by Gerard Butler. He is the ultimate stand up guy and when he and his crew rescue a fellow Russian sub captain from the bottom of the sea, they become immersed in coup to oust the current government in Russia.

American patriotism is down played slightly as the action on screen becomes more about doing the right thing regardless of national ideology. It plays out in some very unbelievable action but is held just on the border of believable (or slightly outside it) by some amazing military technology.

With your suspension of disbelief cranked up to eleven, Hunter Killer is a surprisingly fun romp through some crazy military action. Its view of heroism is rather one sided but the action comes thick and fast to make up for the lack of depth.

For those with an encyclopaedic knowledge of John Coltrane and his works, Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary has few revelations. It does however offer a cavalcade of unseen photo images of both studio and family life and a large number of them are revelatory. It also has more that its fair share of humour and with a man of such serious intent as Coltrane, it’s a welcome addition. The funniest moments are the sound bites from Carlos Santana and his hilarious hippy babble.

The broad strokes are covered and some of John’s lesser angelic qualities are glossed over a bit. His drug and alcohol addictions are touched on but are reduced in the narrative. There is however a touching memory about him quitting cold turkey related by his step daughter Antonia Andrews.

The music in the soundtrack is well mixed, if a little repetitive as it seems the filmmakers only licensed a minimum number of track. It is great to hear JC’s music in a public place once again and the story of his life, even for those more than familiar with the broad strokes is still one of transcendence and musical impact even today over fifty years after his sad early demise.

Chasing Trane will be shown a few more times during the festival and should not be missed.
