Hypnotic Movie Review

In Robert Rodriguez’s new film Hypnotic you are taken on a bumpy ride with an ever-changing narrative with a sting in the tail. It plays with reality with reckless abandon and challenges you to piece together a less-than-satisfactory first half with a more engaging final two reels.

Ben Affleck plays Detective Danny Rourke, a damaged man who is still dealing with the kidnap loss of a daughter and a life that unravelled from that point on. While on duty he is called to the scene of a potential bank robbery and this is where things get rather strange.

As events unfold you are left with a number of misdirections that collectively send you in several wrong directions. The film incorporates a multiple-genre approach. It’s a little bit police procedural, a little bit science fiction and a little bit phycological horror and it never squarely lands in any one category

Tying so many disparate threads into a cohesive strand is a challenge that Rodriguez is almost up for. He’s not helped by several vague character arcs but this is the interesting part when the final reveal happens, the lens is cleaned and the ambiguity is resolved.

Determined to find his missing daughter, detective Danny Rourke instead finds himself spiraling down a rabbit hole while investigating a series of reality-bending bank robberies where he will ultimately call into question his most basic assumptions about everything and everyone in his world.

Aided by Diana Cruz, a gifted psychic, Rourke simultaneously pursues and is pursued by a lethal specter – the one man he believes holds the key to finding the missing girl – only to discover more than he ever bargained for.

Hypnotic is co-written and directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Ben Affleck, Alice Braga, JD Pardo, Hala Finley, Dayo Okeniyi, Jeff Fahey, with Jackie Earle Haley and William Fichtner

All The Devil’s Men DVD Review

Welcome to a world of good bad guys and bad good guys. A world where the son of Mel Gibson (that would be Milo- presumably named after that yummy chocolate drink) gets the chance to flex his muscles and save the day and maybe even the world in the process.

All The Devil’s Men involves globe trotting mercenaries and more than its fair share of clandestine meetings and bullet ridden shoot outs. An adventure filled with double and triple crosses, all done to make the planet safe from those pesky stray nuclear warheads.

This script adds danger on top of danger until you get to the point on not really knowing what the hell is going on. That does little to detract from the gun totting, cliche spitting, macho action either. It’s all mindless fun cranked up to eleven with an ending that will not keep you up at night worrying about mushroom clouds.
