There are many challenges with The King Of Staten Island. For those expecting a parade of predictable comic snippets from Judd Apatow’s inner child, hurdle one is the lack of those expected moments. Then the largest leap of faith is required by staying with Pete Davidson’s slacker character, Scott Carlin, long enough to see the inner child being anything more than a one-dimensional jerk.

Throwing down behavioural anomalies thick and fast does little to make you warm to Scott’s plight in life. His charms are not self-evident, but staying the course does pay dividends. Losing his fireman father at a young age and having an overprotective mother played with sass and a bad haircut by the excellent Marisa Tomei has given him a non-reality world to get lost in. And lost he is.

Davidson, who lost his real-life fireman father in the 9/11 attacks, co-wrote the story with Apatow and Dave Sirus and it mines a world that must have felt very raw at times. The Saturday Night Live alumni’s goofy stoner guy persona is in full effect here but it rings true to the story and his unapologetic approach works this time out.

Trying to experience the film as a journey from a man child’s stilted adolescence into the maturity of adulthood gives the work a little too much responsibility to live up to. Stick with it though and it does come around to win you over in the end. A less extreme transformation might have been more believable but it would have been a lot less entertaining.

With Trainwreck, comedian Amy Schumer continues to throw the gender bias in comedy on its ear. This is funny business with no apologies. Schumer’s on screen character Amy (in line with the persona on her TV show Inside Amy Schumer) is unafraid to indulge in behaviour that traditionally would brand a woman a slut but reward a man with player status. Her walks of shame are informed by a nod and a wink.

The story set up is about a woman in the big city not looking for love but finding it anyway. She is comfortable turning around traditional rom-com situations in regards to male and female behaviour for the discomfort of some audience members. She also succeeds in giving the film a big heart amongst all the relationship carnage.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The way Schumer resolves the final situation is most unexpected and proves her comic ability to think outside the box. It’s a fantastic resolution and way to end the film and adds to the film’s long list of highlights. It is clever without being condescending.

The movies rewards the viewer with so many laugh out loud moments, you sometimes miss the ensuing lines amidst all the laughter. It’s a film that will reward again and again with multiple viewings. See it for the laughs, remember it for its big heart.

The premise is rather simple, make the kind of road movie that stars a pack of randy blokes getting into all kinds of mischief but this time have all the main characters be women instead of men. What looks simple on paper becomes more complex when you try to shoehorn female dynamics into a mold made for males.

Directed by TV actor/director Paul Feig and produced in part by Judd Apatow, Bridesmaids tries to deliver a raucous ride and succeeds for the most part. The cast is excellent and building a film around Kristen Wiig (who is also one of the film’s writers) is never a bad thing as she is a comic heavyweight, it’s just that it’s not always believable seeing women act as stupid and self-involved as men.

This out of character activity leads to some very funny moments but a lot of the bawdy behaviour feels forced and rather slapstick. Building the action around the upcoming nuptials also sends the film down a well-worn path and some of the gags feel quite recycled but then what modern road movie doesn’t elicit a number of those same responses?

In answer to a segment of the market that is virtually ignored or given very sub-standard product (the abomination that was Sex and The City 2 anyone?) Bridesmaids should be applauded and its better than expected gate receipts show that there is an audience out there. Even if the film isn’t as good as it should or could be, it might still mark the start of something good.
