In AFRAID, Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviours and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way.

What does it take to scare a modern audience? Is it even possible to provide enough jolts to the system to get the job done. The Grudge takes an interesting but simple premise and attempts to ramp up the scare tactics enough to get through to a group of horror film aficionados that have been oversaturated by stimuli.

The film shares a storyline with the Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge and the 2004 America remake of the same name. At its most basic, it’s based on a house that becomes attached to and haunts all those that enter it. This time there are individuals whose connection only become apparent as things progress.

Not short of star power, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin and Jacki Weaver are just a few of the actors involved. Andrea Riseborough plays the lead character Detective Muldoon and she tries hard to hit most of the right notes to build the terror. The movie’s structure limits what she can do.

Building a scary experience on things jumping out of the darkness at you and drilling your ears with crescendo after crescendo of eerie sound design only takes you so far. After that there is a need for the story telling to buttress those feeling of unease. The Grudge succeeds at establishing an unsettling feeling but falls short of delivering the big scare.

As a society, we have become more and more connected to our electronic devices. We take for granted the illusion that all the important people in our lives are literally just a click away. Searching focuses on when that connection goes awry.

It also tells the story of a parent’s worst nightmare, the disappearance of their child. John Cho (Harold and Kumar & Star Trek) is perfectly cast as a father with a rigid adherence to order, one that is truly tested when his daughter goes missing. He is aided in his search by a female detective played by Debra Messing (Will & Grace)

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Messing’s performance is outstanding and fearless. She sidestep the glamour and is often shown sans makeup and bleary eyed from lack of sleep. Her intensity is very engaging. The film is shot in a unique way with the big screen often becoming filled with a multitude on computer apps open at the same time. Even though this provides an abundance of information, it does little to help in the search.

This overload almost fells claustrophobic but through the density, a small clue appears and provides forward direction. The film builds to a conclusion that few will see coming and actual ends on a more positive note than expected. Its social commentary is razor sharp and its ‘who done it’ ethos is extremely entertaining.
