A mysterious plague kills almost all of the world’s children and the few that survive have changed. They now have powers. Powers that scare the world’s governments. Their answer to this threat is to round them up and intern them in camps, and not of the holiday variety. The Darkest Minds is the tale of a few that escape.

Mixing storylines of the traditional road movie with science fiction themes and a teen coming of age saga makes up the parts at play here. Some of those ideas work and others don’t and the deciding factor is often the age of the viewer. The film is very much aimed at a younger audience and will score more points with the teen crowd.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

There are universal moments at work here like the selfless act of sacrificing personal ambitions for the common good. Also the act of not always taking things at face value. These are lessons absorbed often as you grow older but ones that may seem fresh at a younger age.

The science fiction ideas are downplayed (the film’s trailer to the contrary) as the human element takes centre stage. The acting is consistent but for older members of the audience there seems to be one or two details missing, ones that would have helped raise The Darkest Minds above the rest.

The small bush town of Corrigan holds more that its share of dark secrets. Secrets that colour the coming of age story about the bookish 14 year-old Charlie Bucktin (Nicholas Denton). When the town trouble maker Jasper Jones (Shaka Cook) involves him in a real life mystery, Charlie’s life changers forever.

Set in the dying days of 1965, the play pulls no punches is showing how difficult it was growing up in a small town where racial intolerance was the tone of the day and the grind of daily boredom was never far away. Into this environment Charlie, a boy who dreams large comes face to face with many of life’s ugly truths while he acts as the show’s narrator.

The play is presented in a brisk fashion, with the clever use of a revolving stage and having the actors play multiple roles to flush out the characters. The stage setting never lets you forget the small town origins while the score keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout with its ominous overtones.

Jasper Jones is an involving examination of the resiliency of the human spirit. It also makes a strong comment on the lack of progress that we as a society have made in the last fifty years.

Director: Sam Strong
Designer: Anna Cordingley
Lighting Designer: Matt Scott
Sounds Designer: Darrin Verhagen
Cast: Ian Bliss, Shaka Cook, Nicholas Denton, Rachel Gordon, Hayden Spencer, Hoa Xuande and Melanie Zanetti
Photographer: David Kelly

Jasper Jones is playing at the Playhouse, QPAC until the 18 August.

While on holiday in Marrakech, an ordinary English couple, Perry (Ewan McGregor, THE IMPOSSIBLE) and Gail (Naomie Harris, SPECTRE), befriend a flamboyant and charismatic Russian, Dima (Stellan Skarsgård, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), who unbeknownst to them is a kingpin money launderer for the Russian mafia.

When Dima asks for their help to deliver classified information to the British Secret Services, Perry and Gail get caught in a dangerous world of international espionage and dirty politics. The couple is propelled on a perilous journey through Paris and Bern, a safe house in the French Alps, to the murky corners of the City of London and an alliance with the British Government via a ruthless and determined MI6 agent (Damian Lewis, ‘Homeland’). Based on the hit John le Carré (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY) novel and directed by acclaimed two-time Emmy nominee Susanna White, this grilling thriller opens in cinemas nationally on July 14.
