McAvoy is in top form and uses all the means in his substantial bag of thespian tricks. He commandingly inhabits the central character of Dennis, who suffers from multiple personality disorder. It’s a twitchy and mesmerising performance that keeps the audience in an almost constant state of unease. He accomplishes this almost entirely with physical acting that uses a minimal amount of make up and costume support.

The movie dips into the horror film approach often and relies heavily on sound cues to direct the audience’s emotions. Very little believable information is given about Dennis and his actual condition, so his disorder is played out in a very one dimensional way. While this does little to give the character a human connection, it does succeed as the basis of a horror franchise film.

Some sympathy towards those with mental health issues would have given the film a less strident tone but this would have probably taken most out of the horror mode. Split is worth a view for McAvoy’s work but does little to advances the understanding of those in need.

The Chaperone takes place amid the backdrop of the tumultuous times of the early 1920’s. The life of a Kansas woman (Elizabeth McGovern, Downton Abbey) is forever changed when she chaperones a beautiful and talented 15-year-old dancer named Louise Brooks to New York for the summer. One of them is eager to fulfil her destiny of dance and movie stardom;  the other hopes to unearth the mysteries of her past.

The Film reunites the writer, director and star of Downton Abbey TV Series. The Chaperone, based on Laura Moriarty’s best-selling book, is scripted by Julian Fellowes, directed by Michael Engler, and stars Elizabeth McGovern, who played Lady Grantham in the hit series.

Their lives revolve around schedules and treatment but within those strict confinements they are still teenagers. They push the limits and still believe in love (or at least the teen version of it). Will and Stella are drawn to each other, he is the resident bad boy with a disregard for protocol and she is the OCD teen that must have everything perfectly organised.

Of course they fall for each other and run headlong into the myriad of rules and restrictions, the biggest of which is the fact they cannot touch each other or even come within five feet of each other for fear of passing contagions. As their relationship builds so does the frustration of their circumstance.

The film takes liberties with the real medical restrictions of the disorder and reduces the complexity to simple terms in pursuit of a youthful storyline. In this way the movies takes aim at a younger audience. For the tweens in the family this approach will be on target for those on the outside, age wise, it will be less compelling.

But unlike most teenagers, she spends much of her time living in a hospital as a cystic fibrosis patient. Her life is full of routines, boundaries and self-control – all of which is put to the test when she meets an impossibly charming fellow patient named Will Newman.

There’s an instant flirtation, though restrictions dictate that they must maintain a safe distance between them.
