The 2026 HSBC German Film Festival, Australia’s only dedicated celebration of German language cinema, is screening nationally from 6 May – 27 May at Palace Cinemas, Palace Nova and Luna Palace Cinemas. Presented by Palace and German Films, this year’s dynamic line-up of contemporary German cinema includes powerful dramas, insightful true-life stories, delightful comedy and charming family films
.

This year’s festival Centrepiece is AMRUM, the celebrated new feature from multi award-winning director Fatih Akin. The film is a moving and deeply poignant drama about a 12-year-old boy named Nanning who lives on Amrum Island in 1945, during the final days of the war. Nanning braves the treacherous sea to hunt seals, goes fishing at night, and works the nearby farm to help his mother feed the family yet despite the hardship, life on the beautiful, windswept island almost feels like paradise. But when peace finally comes, it reveals a deeper threat: the enemy is far closer than he imagined. Starring Laura Tonke, Diane Kruger and Matthias Schweighöfer, plus a brilliant performance from the young lead Jasper Billerbeck, Amrum is based on the real-life story of co-writer Hark Bohm.

Cannes Film Festival Jury Award winner SOUND OF FALLING (In die Sonne schauen) is the festival Special Presentation. Directed by Mascha Schilinski, the haunting drama follows four girls across four generations experiencing their youth on the same farm in northern Germany. A sensory and poetic epic, this beautifully crafted film has garnered much critical acclaim and was Germany’s entry into the 2026 Academy Awards©.

From Switzerland comes a warm and humorous portrait of a unique Swiss cultural phenomenon in HELLO BETTY (Hallo Betty). Set in 1956, Hello Betty follows Emmi Creola, a talented copywriter who defies a male dominated workplace by inventing “Betty Bossi”, a fictional housewife who becomes Switzerland’s culinary icon. As Betty’s popularity skyrockets, Emmi struggles to balance the expectations of her public persona with her role as a wife,
mother and professional. A warm and humorous portrait of the 1950s, Hello Betty explores female ambition, identity and the timeless tension between public image and private life.

The popular ‘Kino for Kids’ sidebar, presented by the Goethe-Institut Australia, returns with a superb selection of films for younger cinemagoers and families. From Austria is THE SECRET FLOOR (Das geheime Stockwerk), a playful time-travel adventure shot in stunning Alpine locations. Twelve-year-old Karli moves with his parents to an old hotel in the Alps and discovers an elevator that transports him through time to 1938 where he makes new friends and must help solve a mystery.

The magical phenomenon returns with SCHOOL OF MAGICAL ANIMALS 4 (Die Schule der magischen Tiere 4). The highly anticipated fourth instalment of the successful franchise School of Magical Animals, based on Margit Auer’s bestselling book series, featuring stunning visual effects and valuable life lessons.
BARRY & ME (Mein Freund Barry) is a breathtaking live-action adventure inspired by the legend of Switzerland’s most famous rescue dog, the St. Bernard. A boy called Georg raises a puppy in secret in a timeless story of friendship, bravery, and survival in late 18th century Switzerland.
Featuring the legendary German children’s character Pumuckl, first created in 1961, PUMUCKL’S BIG MIX-UP (Pumuckl und das große Missverständnis) is a charming and entertaining tale that combines live action and animation, following the adventures of a quiet craftsman in Munich and his mischievous and invisible goblin friend Pumuckl.

In the charming, observant coming-of-age film TOMORROW I’LL BE BRAVE (Ab morgen bin ich mutig) tween angst and young love is explored with a touch of humour and tenderness.

Largely unknown to the current generation of filmgoers, Hildegard Knef led a fascinating life and the documentary I Want It All: Hildegard Knef focuses on the broad strokes of that life. She was born in Ulm, Germany in 1925 and after her father’s passing when she was just six months old moved to Berlin. While living there she endured the full impact of World War Two including the bombing and devastation of that city.

In her teens she studied acting and that passion to entertain fuelled her life and livelihood for the rest of her days. Her story is one of the brutalities of enduring cancer (and its many surgeries) and the judgemental whims of the conservative times. She acted in German films and post-war was contracted to an American studio that had no idea of what to do with her. Music was an important driver of her success and provided a singing career that transcended acting and lasted throughout her life.

She also became a noted writer with a series of books that detailed different periods of her life. Her honesty in written form and through interviews pushing her books is startling. Those filmed interviews show how far that medium has fallen in recent days. The questions she endured and thoughtfully answered are in such stark contrast to our current state of the ten-minute talks to plug whatever new project the artist is currently spruiking.

As a history lesson and insight into the state of her times, it is never less than assertive and shows the strength of her character warts and all. Her only child, a daughter named Christina also drops truth bombs throughout the film. Living in the media spotlight most of her life, with its abundant video evidence contributes greatly to this story. Extraordinary times led to a life of extreme highs and lows and her forthrightness is riveting.

History has not been kind to women who tried to live outside the norm of their time. Empress Elisabeth of Austria or Sisi (Susanne Wolff) was an island onto herself. Entitled to be sure but also filled with ideas that ran counter to her age. With little need for her husband after the birth of their children, she spent most of her time away from the royal court.

During this separation, she was able to indulge her every whim and led a hedonist lifestyle where all those around her had to indulge her outside take on life and its responsibilities. Everyone had to abide by those esoteric wishes or they would soon be replaced. Irma was able to adhere to the dogma better than most.

Covering the last days leading up to the death of Elisabeth of Austria, Sisi & I delivers its own highly stylised version of the truth. It differs substantially from the historical account of those final events. Diversion aside there is sadness at its core as the woman who could seemingly have it all never had what she really wanted.

Berlin, 1942. A young Jewish man, Cioma Schönhaus (rising star Louis Hofmann, Dark, Land of Mine), refuses to let the Nazis take away his zest for life. When he discovers his talent for forging documents – especially passports – he sees this as the ideal way to help not only himself but also others escape deportation.

Thanks to his knack for creating new identities, he dares to venture out, hiding in plain sight and navigating around the authorities with inventiveness and charm. He throws himself into the city’s nightlife with his friends Det (Jonathan Berlin, Summer of 44) and Gerda (Luna Wedler), and even catches a fragile glimpse of love in seemingly hopeless times. But the more lives the trio saves, the more the noose tightens around them.

Directed and written by Maggie Peren, The Forger is based on the true story Samson “Cioma” Schönhaus, a Jewish graphic artist who forged documents to help others escape the Nazis. In this illuminating drama, Hofmann embodies Schönhaus’ indomitable optimism and determination, even in the darkest moments, to focus on the light.

One of Germany’s best known cinema exports Daniel Brühl makes his directorial debut with Next Door. It’s a work that unravels both the participants and audience expectations in a most engaging way. It takes the slow burn approach and ensnares you as more information is presented and the reveals start to add up.

Brühl plays Daniel a well-known movie star who stops for a beverage at a local bar on the way to the airport and gets a lot more than he bargained for from the visit. He becomes engaged in conversation with one of the patrons Burno (Peter Kurth) and is at first amused, then annoyed, and finally horrified by the level of information this man has on him and his family.

It turns out Bruno lives in the building next door to Daniel’s movie star digs and has spent hundreds of hours gleaming all the details of his neighbour’s life. This is a sharp take on the narcissistic tendencies of the movie elite and the isolation from the common folk that is engendered by that level of fame. Unfolding almost like a detective yarn provides you with some great Sherlock moments.

When she comes into contact with a young student Alexander (Ilja Monti) she sees things in him that others don’t. Her obsession comes to full fruition and in so doing, she alienates all those around her including Alexander. The film presents these activities with little principled opinion and evil actions often have seemingly few consequences. You have to find a place in your own morality for this film’s message.

Presented by Palace, the German Film Festival’s full 2021 programme has been revealed, which boasts a spectacular selection of 30 films, the best and latest in German cinema, a number of which are screening for the first time outside Germany.

The Festival, in collaboration with German Films, opens with the eagerly anticipated feature debut of actor Daniel Brühl (Good Bye Lenin!) who directs and stars in NEXT DOOR (Nebenan), fresh from its world premiere at Berlinale. In this darkly comic skewering of celebrity and privilege, Brühl plays a famous actor whose day gets completely railroaded by a stranger with ulterior motives.

The multi award-winning Closing Night film, BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ is a slick new adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s influential 1929 novel of the same name and follows an undocumented immigrant from West Africa on a dark odyssey through Berlin.

Berlin Alexanderplatz was previously adapted by filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Fassbinder is the focus of this year’s Festival spotlight with a glorious 4K restoration of LOLA for its 40th anniversary. Lola follows a seductive cabaret singer in her outrageous quest to elevate herself in a world where everything-and everyone-is for sale. The film will feature special introductions at selected sessions throughout the Festival.

Plus the Cannes Film Festival selected ENFANT TERRIBLE, a provocative and uncompromising biopic that looks at the intense short life and excesses of the iconic New German Cinema auteur, featuring a brilliant performance from Oliver Masucci as Fassbinder.

The city of Berlin features prominently in this year’s festival. Documentary BERLIN BOUNCER tells the story of Berlin – from a divided city to the party metropolis of today – through the eyes of its most legendary doormen. Stars Berghain bouncer Sven Marquardt.

THE KANGAROO CHRONICLES (Die Känguru-Chroniken) is a hilarious adaptation of the bestselling book series by Marc-Uwe Kling and revolves around a mediocre musician and a communist Kangaroo who must team up to fight a right-wing politician. Directed by Dani Levy.

Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann) stars in EXILE (Exil) where cultural and psychological tensions, claustrophobically observed in the workplace and at home, come to a head in Visar Morina’s enthralling thriller about one man’s identity crisis as a foreigner in Germany.
FREE COUNTRY (Freies Land) is set in a recently reunified Germany as two detectives investigate the disappearance of teen sisters in a remote town, where it seems like everyone has something to hide.

What starts as an epic single person journey turn into a transformative experience when Rike (Susanne Wolff) who sets sail by herself to the small island of Ascension in the Atlantic. The first third of the film details how strong and competent a sailer and person Rike is by detailing her attention to detail and unflappable nature. She endures a life threatening storm with some ease as she is very well prepared.

During her journey she encounters a ship that starts out as an enigma. She can plainly see the craft but is unable to make radio contact. Upon closer inspection she discovers it is a broken down trawler filled with what appears to be refugees. In a radio call to the Coast Guard, they ask her a series of questions she cannot answer while appearing to care little about the trawler or its occupants, even warning her to stay away. She decides she must do something to help.

There is morality at play here with how the West places value on people from poorer countries and also the stark contrast between those in power and the powerless. Rike, a trained paramedic helps a young boy who swims to her small boat but collapses from the effort. She leaves the stricken trawler behind as she nurses the boy back to health but does not leave the scene.

As the impending tragedy evolves, the film provides no easy answers. This is not a Hollywood take on things where the good guy comes in at the last minute and saves the day. There are consequences in any course of action and it’s up to you the audience to decide your own take of the outcome.

Styx plays Monday June 3 at Palace Barracks.
