Queensland Cabaret Festival 2017

After three successful years, the Queensland Cabaret Festival is returning in 2017. This year boasts an impressive selection of international and Australian performers ready to set stages alight at Brisbane Powerhouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and Queensland Multicultural Centre this June.

Born in Paris, the city of love, the intimate and provocative art of cabaret has evolved into one of the most captivating live performance genres– an eclectic mix of music, dance, drama and comedy.

This year’s Festival is brimming with internationally acclaimed talent including iconic Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly with Irish chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan; Grammy award-winning jazz guitarist Bill Frisell; star of stage and screen Alan Cumming; The Cat Empire’s front man Felix Riebl; and the world-renowned Sierra Boggess on her debut Australian tour.

I believe this raw genre of story-telling makes for a night of live entertainment as refreshing as it is compelling. I am thrilled with the growth of the Queensland Cabaret Festival over the last four years, and with such an incredibly diverse range of acts this year, I’m confident we will attract new fans to the cabaret genre.

This Festival offers Brisbane audiences a truly unique opportunity to experience the enchanting world of cabaret first-hand.

The Festival has grown this year and will be held in collaboration with three of Brisbane’s premier performance venues: Brisbane Powerhouse, QPAC and Queensland Multicultural Centre.

Brisbane Powerhouse Artistic Director Kris Stewart said audiences can expect a seductive evening of songs and storytelling from performances at Brisbane Powerhouse.

“We’re delighted to be presenting 14 shows as part of the Festival this year, including a performance made up of seven of Brisbane’s best songstresses celebrating the leader of the Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, in Seven on Sinatra” said Stewart.

“I also can’t wait to hear the team behind previously sold out performances like Ziggy Stardust rock out in the Powerhouse Theatre with their new show, In The Warm Room: The Music of Kate Bush 1978-1980.”

QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas said the Centre will present four unforgettable performances as part of the Festival in its acoustically acclaimed Concert Hall.

“From international musical theatre star Sierra Boggess and jazz guitar legend Bill Frisell, to iconic Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly and our QPAC Choir singing songs by supergroup, ABBA, this remarkable line-up has broad appeal and will take audiences on a wonderful journey through exceptional music and rich storytelling.

QPAC is pleased once again to collaborate with Queensland Cabaret Foundation and Brisbane Powerhouse to bring this exciting and eclectic Festival to Brisbane. It showcases an impressive range of talented international and local artists, the diversity of this compelling art form adds to Queensland’s vibrant cultural offerings,”

The 2017 Queensland Cabaret Festival is presented by Brisbane Powerhouse, QPAC and Queensland Cabaret Foundation. We proudly acknowledge the support of Arts Queensland and Brisbane City Council.
