What starts as a somewhat conventional tale of a good girl being seduced by the bad boy, turns into a multilayered story. One that touches on the devastating impact of illness and grief and the power that love of one’s offspring brings to fruition. It’s all told through the filter of a teenage coming of age scenario.

Milla (Eliza Scanlen) is from the first view, an innocent appearing girl going through the usual changes and challenges that face all schoolgirls of her young age. When she meets Moses (Toby Wallace), she is mysteriously seduced by his bad-boy demeanor but obvious intelligence.

At first, looking all the world like a crackhead with his shrunken eyes and manic energy, his wisdom and insight as it unfolds are unanticipated. As the story expands, we meet Milla’s surprisingly dysfunctional family, psychiatrist father Henry (Ben Mendelsohn), and drugged-out mother, Anna (Essie Davis).

As the motivations for their idiosyncrasies become apparent, you get to see beneath the obvious and grow to care about them. Deeply sad and effecting, Babyteeth is an examination of the impact grief makes on one family and how some of their actions while seeming misguided at first show true care and feeling in the end.

Not buying into the standard bad boy artist BS, Acute Misfortune gets under the skin of one of Australia’s most notorious artists, Adam Cullen and in doing so succeeds in getting under your skin as well. Many know little about the painter and sculpture other than his winning the Archibald Prize after at least nine attempts. His portrait of actor David Wenham was a controversial choice back in 2000 and caused a divide in the Australian art scene.

The film is based on the respected biography of Cullen by Erik Jensen’s and both the book and movie probe the depths of the complexities and contradictions of this tortured soul. Jensen deserved combat pay as his time spent with the artist included him being shot, stabbed and pushed off the back of a moving motorcycle. He also spent enough time with Cullen to see below the facade.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Put into a larger context the film is also about family and the degree to which the relationship between parent and child can effect one’s behaviour for a lifetime. Cullen had many unresolved issues with both mother and father and this was reflected in his artwork. As was his relationships with women and his unresolved sexuality.

Cullen died in 2012 at the age of 46 when his body basically just gave up after years of drug and alcohol abuse. He left behind a body of work that is filled with as many contradictions as existed in his life. There are examples of his early work that are contemplative and beautiful, while later works filled with assertive chaos and raw anger. Like all great art they do well to mirror the events of his inner soul.

ACUTE MISFORTUNE will be released in selected cinemas nationally from 16 May accompanied by a series of special event Q&As. Based on the award-winning biography of Archibald Prize winner Adam Cullen by Erik Jensen, the founding editor of The Saturday Paper, the acclaimed film is a bold, layered depiction of the relationship between the biographer and his subject.

The debut feature of Thomas M. Wright (Sweet Country, Top of the Lake, Everest), is produced by Plot Media, Blackheath Film and Arenamedia, and features AACTA Best Actor winner Daniel Henshall (Snowtown) as Adam Cullen and with a breakout performance by Toby Wallace (Romper Stomper) as Jensen.

ACUTE MISFORTUNE was named one of the best films of the year by The Monthly and Screen Daily and was the recipient of The Age Critics Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival. It was acclaimed by The Guardian, in a five-star review, as “The best Australian Bio-Pic since Chopper” and the Hollywood Reporter called it “One of the year’s most striking and accomplished directorial debuts.” The score by Evelyn Ida Morris was the only feature score to receive an ARIA nomination.

Erik Jensen was an ambitious nineteen-year-old journalist at the Sydney Morning Herald when he was commissioned to write a profile of the painter Adam Cullen, the most prominent painter of his generation, who at forty-two was the youngest ever subject of a career retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. After reading the article, Cullen invited Jensen to write his biography.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Jensen spent four years on and off with Cullen until his death at the age of 46. This is the story of their increasingly claustrophobic relationship. Cullen lied to Jensen, shot him and threw him from a motorbike. ACUTE MISFORTUNE reveals an iconic artist and an acclaimed journalist in unsparing detail. It is a film about acclaim and identity; theft and the commerce of theft, the instability of lies and the consequences of a flawed contract; and about coming through an abusive relationship to find meaning in its wake.

The book, ACUTE MISFORTUNE: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF ADAM CULLEN, was named among the Best of 2014 by The Australian, The Australian Financial Review, The Guardian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sunday Mail, The New Daily and The Age. It will be re-printed to coincide with the film’s release.

Director, co-writer and co-producer Thomas M. Wright comments, “ACUTE MISFORTUNE is the story of a relationship. A relationship of abandon, warmth and intensity – and of control, tension and violence. It is a literary detective story, about trying to write the truth of another person.”

Erik Jensen says of the film: “Watching as this book become a film has been one of the great privileges of my career. I started writing this story when I was 19, staying in Adam’s spare room on the promise of a book contract. I stayed because Adam fascinated me. Writing the screenplay with Thomas M. Wright was just as illuminating, in some ways, as those years spent interviewing Adam.”

ACUTE MISFORTUNE is in Australian cinemas May 16!

It’s Halloween 1997 – the last night of high school for Corey, Jango and their skater gang, The Gromits. Childhood is over and adult life beckons. But for Corey, his past has some unfinished business. When he encounters Jonah, a former childhood friend but now victimised by Jango’s cruel streak, Corey takes pity on him and agrees to walk him home for old time’s sake.

What starts off as a normal walk through empty suburban streets descends into something darker and magical as they tell each other ghost stories, drawing upon their fears of the world around them. But on the night of the grave’s delight, even the most buried truths will find a way of coming to life.
