Gone is the intricate detective yarn, where detailed research and some kick ass computer hacking leads to finding the villain. In its place is a big dumb American style action piece. The kind where the most implausible and physics defying scenarios are played out to keep our hero out of major harm’s way. Damaged and slightly singed but not broken.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web is based on the fourth novel of the Millennium Series and was written by David Lagercrantz, not by the author of the first three books, Stieg Larsson, who sadly passed away in 2004 of a heart attack. The film uses little of that book.

In the context of this new approach, the film is good fun and exotic (in both place and action) enough to offer something somewhat new to action film junkies. It’s big and loud and the girls on screen kick some serious butt. Who says only the boys can have all the fun?
