Claire (Juliette Binoche), a university lecturer and mother of two teenage boys, is contending with the approach of middle age and remains stung by the betrayal of her ex-husband, who is building a new life with someone else. Claire has a new lover too, but is under no illusions as to his fidelity.

Out of a mix of petulance and curiosity, she impulsively creates a fake Facebook profile in which to keep an eye on him: she’s ‘Clara’, vivacious, blonde… and 24 years old. He doesn’t take the bait, but his close friend (François Civil) does, and their online connection soon becomes flirtatious. Titillated by the opportunity of being “young again”, Claire’s deceptions lead both of her identities into increasingly dangerous territory.

What are we without our memories and most-treasured possessions? That’s the question that we’re invited to contemplate in CLAIRE DARLING, the thoughtful and affecting new film from Julie Bertuccelli (Since Otar Left), based on the best-selling novel by Lynda Rutledge.

On the first day of summer, reclusive millionaire Claire (Catherine Deneuve) lays all of her worldly objects out on the front lawn of her mansion, impulsively determined to sell everything. As a horde of curious bystanders and opportunistic neighbours fight over the ridiculously underpriced antiques, each object stirs vivid memories for Claire of her flamboyant life. But soon, her long-estranged daughter Marie (Chiara Mastroianni) arrives, determined to stop these proceedings by any means.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Superbly observed and flawlessly acted (the heartrending performances of the two children are more than worth the price of admission), Legrand’s precise dissection of this family dynamic masterfully builds into a pulse-pounding thriller. Honest, yet still evoking profound sympathy for all its protagonists, CUSTODY is sure to be remembered as one of the most important and vital films of 2018.

Custody will open in cinemas nationally on September 27, 2018.

In the summer of 1993, following the death of her parents, six-year-old Frida (Laia Artigas) is sent from bustling Barcelona to the Catalan provinces to live with her aunt (Bruna Cusí) and uncle (David Verdaguer). The couple’s own daughter Anna (Paula Robles) welcomes her new sister with open arms, but Frida has a hard time coping with her emotions, and the source of her parents’ passing casts a shadow over how Frida is treated by the local community.

Fifty-year-old Aurore Tabort (Agnès Jaoui, The Taste of Others), separated from her husband and newly unemployed, discovers she is to become a grandmother. She feels as if her own life has come to a standstill and is slowly being pushed away to the fringes of society.

But after bumping into the great love of her youth, Totoche, (Thibault de Montalembert, Call My Agent!) something changes… Aurore wonders if it might still be possible to embark on something new. A hugely entertaining blend of humour, truthfulness and sensitivity, Blandine Lenoir’s warm-hearted romantic comedy is an endearing portrait of an everyday heroine on the road to (re)discovery, and a celebration of the resilience of womanhood.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival 2017, LOVELESS is the searing new drama from Andrey Zvyagintsev (Leviathan, Elena, The Return), arguably the most fearless and vital filmmaker in modern European cinema.

In the midst of a vicious divorce, and already embarking on new lives with new partners, Zhenya (Maryana Spivak) and Boris (Alexey Rozin) are impatient to start again, even if it means threatening to abandon their 12-year-old son Alyosha (Matvey Novikov).

But when the boy doesn’t return home one night, and the couple are confronted by ambivalent and resource-strained authorities, they are forced to mount their own independent search… one that drives them to confront their fears, past actions and complacency.

Loveless will open in cinemas nationally on April 25.
