Elliott (Maisy Stella of the TV show Nashville) is a girl in transition. She is finding her way in the world and many things remain undecided. Her sexuality is fluid as is her comfort to the life laid out in front of her. She dreams of leaving her hometown and bristles under the direction and limited opportunities afforded by its small population.

Into this mix of conflicting emotions comes a night like no other. While tripping on mushrooms with her two best gal pals she meets her older self played by Aubrey Plaza. The 39-year-old version of herself dispenses tidbits of future information and one ominous warning, did not under any circumstances fall in with a boy named Chad. Of course, the name becomes prophetic and she soon meets someone with that moniker.

The appeal of My Old Ass derives from its relaxed and non-judgemental approach. The teen angst is there but it does not define the characters’ actions or ultimate choices. The film’s 88-minute run time also keeps things light and it finishes before you know it. This work should be seen by any family member questioning their direction in life as it is sure to create a healthy dialogue.
