Like most of the new generation of ‘kid friendly’ films, The LEGO Batman Movie gets the mix just right for the enjoyment of film goers of all ages. There are the surface jokes and incredibly detailed set designs that will keep the young ones enthralled but the underlying riffs of a more adult sense of humour provide something for the parents as well.

Following his success in the original Lego Movie, voice actor Will Arnett reprises his role of Batman / Bruce Wayne as he’s an excellent choice. His voice has just the right amount of wit and snark and he plays it all to the hilt. Without getting all the Batman fanboys and girl’s knickers in a bunch, the whole billionaire crime fighting playboy with a dark side gets the send up it so richly deserves and what better way to do that than with a world built on plastic pieces.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The animation this time out is a bit more conventional than the Lego Movie. Things like running water now look more CGI than before. In past the effect looked more stop motion animation and was represented by cascades of blue coloured plastic pieces, now it looks like it was created by a keyboard. It’s a change that takes away a bit of the original’s charm but was probably done as a cost cutting measure.

The kid friendly storyline this time focuses on the value of family and having people to share things with both good and bad. This gives the experience an accessible young person element that will sit well with the olds. For the rest of us, there is still much to admire amidst a world where the jokes come flying at you and hit more often than miss.

Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO® Bricks is a world premiere exhibition of astonishing LEGO skyscrapers at the Museum of Sydney.

Constructed by Ryan McNaught, one of only 12 LEGO® certified professionals worldwide, this exhibition celebrates tall and extraordinary buildings from Australia and Asia. Some are engineering head-turners while others are technical marvels.

Some of these eye-popping giants, like the Shanghai Tower, pioneer new ways of living, while others like Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands are instant global landmarks. Some are green, others lean. Some are strange and other-worldly, others are breathtakingly beautiful.

With several models standing over 3 metres high, with stunning architectural detail and playful use of colours and textures, each of these LEGO® structures is guaranteed to amaze. They’ll also inspire the young and the young-at-heart to create their own ‘towers of tomorrow’.

With over 200,000 loose LEGO® bricks on hand, you’ll have more than enough to build your own towering creation and add it to the colourful futuristic metropolis rising steadily in the heart of the exhibition.

“Like the real things, super-tall LEGO® buildings are truly inspirational,” says Mark Goggin, director of Sydney Living Museums, “Not only do Ryan’s models prove what’s possible with everyday LEGO® bricks, but experiencing so many of them together in a world first line-up, perched together side by side, is nothing short of mind-blowing, even at 1:200 scale.”

Ryan McNaught agrees, “it’s by far the biggest building job I’ve ever faced and certainly the most fun. My head’s still spinning.”

Many films suffer from too many ideas at play, The Lego Movie greatly benefits from this approach. It’s a film that works on multiple levels and one that is filled with so much humor and heart, you would be hard pressed to find anyone not taken in by its charms. It also takes great advantage in being able to incorporate movie icons not usually allowed to roam by their overlords of branding. I’m looking at you Batman (hilariously voiced by Will Arnett in this instance).

The underlying message is a positive one (believing in yourself and seeing greatness in everyday moments) but really even if the theme was completely saccharin, who could take that much offense when it is delivered by yellow plastic beings with hooks for hands!

The jokes fly fast and furious while the filmmakers get the mix of adult humor and childlike wonder spot on. There is also the fun of identifying the voice actors. The list includes Morgan Freeman, Jonah Hill, Liam Neeson and Channing Tatum to name just a few.

Few films released this year will be as guaranteed to entertain the entire family as The Lego Movie. Its wild imagination and chock o block approach never lets up and rarely skips a beat. Just a note to end, for families on a budget, you can feel comfortable in skipping the added expense of 3D screenings as the film works just as well in 2D.
