You are stuck in a large metal tube at 30,000 feet, and the plane is filled with criminal assassins, and you are tasked with protecting the one person whose photo is appearing on everyone’s phone. What could possibly go wrong? In this crazy, fun-filled film, there is actually quite a lot.

Ex-Secret Service agent Lucas Reyes (Josh Hartnett) is having a very bad day. He’s been on the run for over two years after being cast aside by the agency for going rogue, and now the person who caused his exit, Katherine Brunt (Katee Sackhoff), has contacted him for a chance at redemption.

While this set-up isn’t the most unique scenario, the way it plays out is anything but normal. The film’s sense of humour will challenge you to put aside your aversions to violence and laugh at the most repugnant of dispatches. Improvisation is the key on a plane with almost no weapons.

Fast-paced at only 102 minutes long, Fight or Flight flies by and never lets its energetic approach down. It also has at its heart something to say about the current power structure and the government abuses of power that seem to dominate the headlines; it just delivers its message while making you laugh uproariously.

The Riddick franchise has always held style over substance and the filmmakers of the first edition, Pitch Black were quite adept at turning what was a low budget science fiction yarn into a big dollar money making machine. This latest edition looks marginally better than its predecessors but the emphasis is still on mood and not pinpoint detail.

The film also has a lot of humour (and not always intentional) at its core as Diesel’s dialogue is a succession of ultra cliché sound bites. You get to the point of almost trying to will Riddick to use regular speech but its to no avail as all that leaves his lips is badass speak.

While far from a challenging science fiction mind expansion experience the film does work quite well on a basic entertainment level. With the laughs equal to the groan out loud moments, Riddick provides a fun few hours with a certified big screen BAMF.
