Will is played by Paul Mescal, and Agnes by Jessie Buckley and their performances are a masterclass in the art of acting. They are rich in subtle nuances and unspoken communications, and strangely, for a story about someone whose words were of utmost importance, this work could have almost worked as a silent film without losing any of its impact.

Will is portrayed as kind and generous with his words, but socially uncomfortable and not universally applauded by his immediate family. The relationship leading to the marriage is rushed, and soon, children enter the picture. With the birth of twins Hamnet and Judith, the family dynamic shifts. With the early death at 11 years old of their son Hamlet, their lives are torn asunder.

The way that the two parents deal with the grief is seemingly at polar opposites. Will disappears into his work, and Agnes is left to hold the family together. This creates one of the film’s most emotionally charged scenes when Agnes is made aware of Will’s deep love and sorrow for their departed son. This is a work that appeals even to those with no interest in Shakespeare and his works. It features raw human emotion that transcends any single person’s life story.

The balance between exposition and action feels out of kilter. There are ideas and plot devices that can’t be fully expressed in mere sentences and the Marvel movie’s proclivity to build to a spectacular final reel seemed unavoidable. This does little to enliven the final results.

The expansion of ideas taps into some interesting avenues and things look dire for most of the human race until the final crescendo. That there is hope for humankind by film’s end is of some redemption.

As far as origin stories go Eternals sets itself a heavy task for future films as one struggles this time to retain character details, names, and actions. The feeling of this work being relegated to being just an extended trailer for what comes next is difficult to overcome.

Overwhelmingly sad but life reaffirming at the same time, the film presents yet another example of a role that only Frances McDormand could bring to full fruition. She plays Fern, a woman who many will see as having lost everything. Gone are, her job, her husband, her home, even her town has been reduced to empty domiciles and a nonexistent postcode.

These circumstances have not destroyed her. She has dealt with all the loss by hitting the road and living the life of a vagabond. While some will see her as being ensnared in a tar pit of sorrow, she finds liberation in the open plains and the sea of new people that she comes in contact with. The film leaves it up to you to find in your own heart, is it liberation or loneliness?

With contrasting viewpoints about the disposable nature of certain segments of the population and their redemption via the ability to find a degree of comfort in just about any setting or just coping with unchecked mental conditions, the experience will still leave its mark. There has to be a better way to treat the members of society that fall outside the traditional norm. It holds true that their value doesn’t run out when their employment opportunities do.
