One of the most anticipated events on the Brisbane calendar, the 12th annual LUMINOUS Lantern Parade celebrates Queensland Week by highlighting the strength of our cultural diversity, our heritage, our people, places and history, giving all Queenslanders the opportunity to say “Welcome!” to our newest Australians and celebrate our diversity.

This free event unites government, community leaders, multicultural communities and everyday Queenslanders, capturing our imaginations with its spectacular use of light as it illuminates the South Bank precinct to symbolise hope and create welcome.

LUMINOUS 2019 features an array of new lanterns. Some of the larger lanterns include a koala, owl, kangaroo and rainbow serpent, as well as iconic Brisbane landmarks including the Story Bridge and City Hall.

LUMINOUS parade walkers can either carry a small hand-held lantern, or join another community group with a large lantern.

More than 15,000 people are expected to be part of the spectacle of light and sound, set against the backdrop of the River City.

The event concludes with a vibrant free concert on the Cultural Forecourt.

South Bank’s aging Arbour View Café precinct has been transformed into Flowstate: a vibrant, temporary open-air pavilion and creative space.

South Bank Corporation Chair Dr Catherin Bull AM said Flowstate, the Corporation’s first significant redevelopment in the Parklands since the award-winning River Quay in 2011, provides a tangible demonstration of creative urban recycling in the heart of the precinct.

“Around the world, leading public precincts are constantly evolving and it is the Corporation’s role to oversee, adapt and transform South Bank so it remains relevant, desirable and exciting both publicly and commercially,” Dr Bull said.

“Flowstate is an ephemeral, interim use that will be in place for 18 months – 3 years, with an inaugural showcase of artistic experiences free-of-charge to the community.”

Site specifics remain tightly-guarded ahead of next month’s unveiling and program launch, however Corporation management is keen to announce that after a national search specialist Australian architecture and performance design firm Stukel Stone were engaged to transform the 3000sqm space in the heart of South Bank.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The new area will comprise three distinctive experiences including a grassy relaxation zone, an immersive digital installation, and a vibrant performance pavilion.

Stukel Stone directors Daniel Stukel Beasly and Tobhiyah Stone Feller said, “Flowstate blurs the distinctions between landscape and architecture, theatre and public space. We have provided multiple possibilities in the design for how the site can be used and are very interested to see how performers, artists and audiences will respond and activate the site in unique and unexpected ways.”

Dr Bull said the new interim use continues South Bank’s 25-year legacy as a ‘people’s place’ and will stimulate conversation about city form.

Flowstate will open to the public late January 2018, with the program of free events to launch Monday 29 January.
