Known as one of France’s most beloved and awarded actors, the remarkable Daniel Auteuil is also an accomplished writer and director, and THE THREAD – his fifth feature at the helm – finds him once again in top form both in front of and behind the camera.

Auteuil stars as Jean Monier, a well-past his prime defence lawyer who – ever since discovering he was responsible for a killer being exonerated – now prefers to work as a prosecutor. But one evening Jean agrees to help his over-committed wife and fellow counsel Annie (Sidse Babett Knudsen) by meeting with Nicolas Milik (Grégory Gadebois), a shell-shocked father of five who has just been arrested for the murder of his troubled wife. Milik’s predicament inexplicably touches Jean; the more he pieces together the events of the night in question, the more he becomes convinced of Milik’s innocence. Soon Jean rediscovers his passion for his vocation, and becomes obsessed with exposing the killer.

Characterised by typically first-rate performances from its stellar cast, this pulled-from-the-headlines drama – based on true events and adapted from the memoirs of lawyer-turned-bestselling author Jean-Yves Moyart – is a gripping exploration of guilt, conceit and the slippery nature of justice. An Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival and major word of mouth hit at the French box office in 2024, THE THREAD packs a genuine punch, with a conclusion that lingers long after the credits have rolled.

From writer/director Régis Roinsard (Populaire), this ingenious new whodunit is an Agathe Christie-style mystery in the vein of Murder on the Orient Express and recent hit Knives Out, featuring a terrific international cast.

The eagerly awaited final book of a best-selling Dragon Tattoo-esque French trilogy is about to be globally released, and nine international language experts have been hired to translate it into their native tongues (English, Danish, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Greek and German). With the stakes so high, the supercilious publisher (Lambert Wilson) has them on lock-down, confined together in a bunker – without any contact to the outside world – until the task is completed.

So when the first ten pages of the top-secret manuscript inexplicably leak online with a ransom threat, it’s evident that the thief could only be amongst them. Their increasingly paranoid and desperate captor is ready to do whatever it takes to unmask him… or her… or them.

Starring Lambert Wilson, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Olga Kurylenko, Riccardo Scamarcio, The Translators will be released in Australian cinemas (ex. Victoria) September 17!
