Sometimes when a woman plans the wedding of her dreams, it includes everything, everything but the groom. Rosa (Candela Peña) has reached the end of her tether and needs to make a statement to the family and friends that take her for granted. What better way than a wedding. A wedding for one.

Rosa tries to do it all. Full-time work (and then some) as a seamstress, keeping a wayward daughter on the up and up, even looking after the neighbour’s plants while they are away on the vacations she never seems to have. She is helpful to all who ask and this has led her to be bled dry of energy and joy.

One day she decides to put herself first and disappears from her normal day to day. Slowly all her dependents realise her absence and are unbelieving when confronted with the gap his absence has created. This is a consistently amusing work that often rises to the level of outright laughter but not to the degree of feeling forced or artificial. There are so many signposts that mirror normal life, its appeal is universal.

Wishlist Movie Review – Moro Spanish Film Festival

Utterly charming and a bit naughty, Wishlist is a perfect introduction to the allure of Spanish cinema. It’s an irreverent look at friendship, family, and survival in the face of long odds. It’s a road movie driven by female energy and the avoidance of male one-upmanship is refreshing.

Eva (María León) and Carmen (Victoria Abril) meet during chemotherapy and become friends while the elder Carmen helps Eva with her hard-earned wisdom. They make bucket lists, grab their gal pal Mar (Silvia Alonso), and hit the road. As they check off the items on the lists their lives become transformed.

The film could have easily descended into predictable cliche if it weren’t for the ever-present chemistry between the three lady leads. Even the male characters provide more support than anguish. This is a work to get lost in the pure joy of survival and the substantial effect of optimism.

The Moro Spanish Film Festival Announces First Highlights for 2020 Programme!

The 23rd Moro Spanish Film Festival presented by Palace returns in April with a flick of the flamenco heel and toothpicks for our pinchos to celebrate cinema from Spain and Latin America.

The following six titles are our first sneak peak into the curated programme which will screen nationally from 21 April exclusively at Palace Cinemas.

From Spain, the selection includes:
Oscar-winner Alejandro Amenábar’s exposé of the 1936 Spanish coup WHILE AT WAR (Mientras dure la Guerra). Filmed across Spain and Argentina, it reveals the personal side of politics through the eyes of writer Miguel de Unamuno.

Trapped inside a small apartment where hidden secrets slowly rise to the surface, THE PLAN (El plan) sees three friends forced to confront revealing truths in this biting comedy featuring Spanish stars Antonio de la Torre and Raúl Arévalo.

THE EUROPEANS (Los europeos) stars Award-winning actors Raúl Arévalo and Juan Diego Botto in an unforgettable romantic holiday adventure set in the wild world of 1950’s Ibiza, where dreams sometimes carry a sting in the tail.

And the dream of home ownership takes an unexpected turn in ONE CAREFUL OWNER (El inconveniente)
when a young woman must wait for a property’s current elderly owner to die in this offbeat tale of women’s friendship.

From Latin America comes:
HEROIC LOSERS (La Odisea de los Giles) the number one Argentinian film of 2019! Heroic Losers is a homespun Ocean’s 11 featuring superstar Ricardo Darín and his son Chino in a comedy heist rich in local colour and unforgettable characters.

And highlighting the Australian-Spanish connection is LATIGO in which Australian comic and filmmaker Simon Palomares visits Cuba to reveal the universal joy of laughter in a film heralded as “The Buena Vista Social Club of comedy!”

The festival will take place nationally from 21 April to 17 May in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart and Byron Bay.

Moro Spanish Film Festival – Champions Movie Review

The argument that film is or isn’t art is very much tilted towards the art side with a work like Champions. Great art brings about an emotional response and this movie Is magnificent at making you feel.

It is so up-lifting and life reaffirming, it belongs on anyone’s and everyone’s list of must see films. The cast is made up of professional and non-professional actors and they both do a superlative job.

Javier Gutiérrez is Marco, a basketball coach on a downward spiral. He has separated from his wife, gotten fired from his coaching duties and then thrown in jail for drunk driving. The judge offers him community service in lieu of jail time where he has to coach a team made up of mentally disabled players.

At first he follows the self absorbed path that lead him nowhere before he starts to think of them before himself. The team members are played by all amateur actors and they will absolutely win over your heart. Also of note is the relaxed delivery of the Spanish dialogue in the film. This makes for an easy go to both watch the film and keep up with the subtitles.

Moro Spanish Film Festival – Carmen & Lola Movie Review

Within the tightly controlled circle of the Gypsy world, those that deviate from the norm are quickly ostracised. Add in the demands of catholicism and you now have very little opportunity for expression. Carmen & Lola are two girls on the verge of womanhood that share a secret.

This secret has the ability to blow both their worlds apart but young love only knows young love. This examination of a culturally forbidden love is presented as part social story and part teen drama. It helps the teen drama aspect that both women are very attractive, this however blunts the film’s social impact. It is still a fascinating insight into the Gypsy world, a world very few know.

Moro Spanish Film Festival – The Good Girls Movie review

Sofía (Ilse Salas) lives the life of the rich and entitled. Her days are filled with shopping, visits to the beauty saloon and lunches at the tennis club. Her husband Fernando (Flavio Medina) has always provided her with a lavish lifestyle but when the eighties era Mexican economy takes a downturn, things will never be the same.

Sofía deals with this financial crises the only way she can, by completely ignoring it. Things are crumbling around her and it’s to the quality of Salas’ performance that you see this uncertainty and the fear it instills in her in such fine detail. It’s in the cracks of her tightly wound persona that the details become apparent. This is a voyeuristic tale of the rich with a stark reality at its centre.
