Filip and his friend Fredrik Wikingsson (self) plan an elaborate road trip to help Lars rekindle his love for life. This includes buying an old Citroen 4 car previously used in family trips and retrace the journey from Sweden to Lars’ favourite spot on earth along the coast in France. Things do not start well.

After an initial reluctance to hit the road, Lars agrees but soon suffers a fall and becomes hospitalised with a broken bone. This puts the trip on hold but it eventually resumes. Due to the film being based on real people, it is filled with actual photos and video footage of the family during their younger years. This divulges information on how much Lars loved life and how much he has slipped.

The story is told in flashbacks and reproductions of moments held dear by the participants and they are very moving. The recovery of Lars is also told in small increments and this makes it much more emotionally impactful. It also makes it easier to root for his resurgence. The Last Journey is a touching examination of the love between father and son and a great example of the extraordinary moments found in even the most ordinary of lives.

Travelling with his best friend and fellow filmmaker/presenter Fredrik Wikingsson, Filip is confident the road trip to the Mediterranean will help to invigorate his depressed dad by reliving some of the best moments and memories of his life.

Leaving Filip’s mum at home in Sweden, the three men set off, driving the same orange Renault 4 the Hammar family used to own. But the journey runs into trouble almost immediately when Lars falls in his hotel room overnight and breaks a bone.

As Lars is required to stay in hospital in Malmö until he’s able to walk, Filip and Fredrik continue their trip, driving through Denmark, Germany and Belgium, and eventually meeting up with Lars just before they cross over the border into France.

Arriving in Beaulieu-sur-Mar, the coastal town that meant so much to Lars, the sea air and beautiful scenery seem to have an immediate effect on him. As the three men move into the same apartment the Hammar family used to stay in, Filip begins to engineer a series of stories and events he remembers from his childhood, designed to stimulate the aging Lars.

But Filip eventually begins to realise that his aging, ailing father will never be the man he remembers and is forced to accept the inevitable, that his father is slipping away from him.

An honest, genre-defying look at death’s approach as seen through the eyes of a desperate son who has lived in denial of the inevitable, THE LAST JOURNEY is a heartfelt investigation into the end we all face with our parents and a glance into our own futures.
