Something that is taken so completely for granted today, the act of eating food in a restaurant is given a historic outline in Éric Besnard’s Delicious. Utilising real facts and then dramatising them, he creates the environment in which the world’s first restaurant came to fruition.

Set in France in the seventeen-eighties right before the Revolution. Fine food was only the privilege of the rich and entitled. It was their way of sharing their status and wealth and as such a quality chef was a prized employee. They also held their job at the whim of their employer.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

He believed so strongly, he left his country and young family behind in France as occupational forces overwhelmed the country to travel to England in an attempt to rally support from the British and to strengthen the resolve of the French people in their resistance. His efforts alienated him from his fellow ministers and even lead him to being branded a traitor and having warrants issued for his arrest.

Lambert Wilson plays Charles de Gaulle with the stubbornness and implacable nature that he was famous for but the film also highlights his love for family and especially his daughter Anne who suffered from Down’s syndrome. This multiplicity was at the heart of this complicated and historically important man. De Gaulle once said to Winston Churchill that the French people thought he was a reincarnation of Joan of Arc, to which Churchill replied that the English had had to burn the last one.

Writer/director Gabriel Le Bomin’s spectacularly-mounted biographical drama DE GAULLE stirringly depicts a crucial period in the life of one of modern French history’s most famous figures.

It is May 1940, where the war between Germany and its neighbours has intensified. Shockingly, the French army collapses, and Hitler seizes Paris. The government is in panic and considers accepting defeat, but recently promoted two-star General Charles de Gaulle (The Translators’ Lambert Wilson), wants to change the course of history…

His wife, Yvonne (Isabelle Carré), is his first support, but very quickly events spiral out of control and separate them – she and their children set out on the roads of exodus, as Charles travels to London to meet with Winston Churchill. He wants to make another voice heard: that of resistance.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Matching the impact and scale of recent war dramas The Darkest Hour and The King’s Choice as it depicts crucial incidents in gripping tick-tock fashion, Le Bomin expertly mixes the historic and the Romanesque, charting both a military debacle and the eventual revelation of a destiny.

De Gaulle will be released in Australian cinemas May 6!
