Exercising one’s creativity in certain fields isn’t always easy. If photography is your jam, it’s even more difficult. Having an individual voice in that medium is especially challenging now that the world and its inhabitants possess over 8.58 billion mobile phones, and almost all of them have a camera built in. It can still be done; you just have to think outside the box.

That is a box that British photographer Martin Parr has stepped outside of all throughout his career. His early black & white work, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary in normal British life, is fantastic and more than a bit humorous. When he made the switch to colour photography in the early eighties, his work continued to show British life as even more colourful.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The story is told by the man himself, with fellow photographers and historians helping to put his work into context. The footage of him unassumingly wandering around in public with a camera and a walker shows how he gains access to the normal world. He’s not above forcing the issue, and one scene of him demanding a subject stop smiling is illustrative.

Even if your interest in photography is limited, it’s still a fascinating story. For those with an interest in the art form, there comes a wealth of useful observations and an insight into Parr’s methodology and approach. His storytelling is concise and vivid (and not above the occasional controversies), and this is all accomplished without a single word being needed.

Can ancient medicines help us to reimagine our relationship to dying in a death-denying culture?

The doorway to death is the last great frontier in a human life. Intellectually, we all know our lives will end, and yet – in the Western world at least – we act as if death is a mirage, disappearing the closer we move towards it. Two doctors in Australia are using psilocybin to help ease the anguish of their patients at end-of-life, and the results they have seen are truly remarkable.

But this visioning tool, like other plant medicines, is not new, it comes from ancient traditions. When the doctors journey to the Amazon to experience traditional medicines for themselves they are confronted by realisations they have no explanation for. Is it possible the world’s oldest cultures have something important to teach us, not just about traditional medicines, but about death itself?

“This is not new knowledge; this is lost knowledge.”

Fresh from playing to sold-out crowds, with queues around the block at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and ahead of its theatrical release on September 4, BUT ALSO JOHN CLARKE has quickly become one of the most talked-about films of the season, bringing to the big screen the wit, wisdom and enduring legacy of one of Australia and New Zealand’s most loved satirists.

Shot over many months across both countries, BUT ALSO JOHN CLARKE captures Clarke’s biggest moments and lasting impact on generations of audiences, while offering rare glimpses into the man behind the satire.

The defining satirical voice of his era, John Clarke famously revealed little of his private world. Through an intimate series of recorded conversations with his daughter, writer, performer and director Lorin Clarke, audiences are invited into the personal life of the man whose humour shaped our national identity. These exchanges illuminate Clarke’s unwavering resistance to authority, his controversial decision to leave New Zealand for Australia in 1977, and his remarkable four decades in entertainment.

Forty-two of John’s friends, colleagues and collaborators – actors, comedians, journalists and international comedy greats such as Ben Elton, Sam Neill, Bryan Dawe, Andrew Denton, Ernie Dingo, Jana Wendt, Shaun Micallef, David Wenham, Wendy Harmer and many more – share memories, insights and laughter as they honour a singular cultural icon.

Weaving together anecdotes, rich television archives, treasures from more than 200 boxes of Clarke’s personal work and letters, and the voices of those who knew him best, BUT ALSO JOHN CLARKE is the definitive film on a cultural giant – offering audiences both the public legend and the private father.

This is the feature directorial debut of Lorin Clarke, best known as the creator and narrator of the award-winning ABC Radio National series The Fitzroy Diaries, and author of the memoir Would That Be Funny (Text Publishing, 2023).

All my creative friends are different. The more creative, the more outside the norm they are. The most focused ones create a life that becomes a work of art. Nowhere do these ideals come into sharper focus than with films like Dale Frank Nobody’s Sweetie. The Australian artist has an amazing body of work and an existence that has become art itself.

The film gives you snapshots of his life. His move to Europe and his artistic output then that coincided with the Punk movement in England during the Thatcher years. His slow integration into the upper echelon of the Australian art world, the socioeconomic realities of the eighties and a late-in-life diagnosis of Autism that was a major revelation.

Throughout it all he just kept creating art. The film includes an amazing selection of his works as still images and a small critique must be stated, the still shoots don’t last long enough with the level of detail in a lot of his work. When this film makes its way to the home video market, the pause button will get a workout. As it is now in the cinema world, it’s great to see these images take up an entire wall!

The cliche of the artist having to be a bad boy (or girl) to be relevant in the public’s eye gets a mention or two but this is easily tuned out by the sheer expansive body of his work. Being a dedicated outcast takes more time and effort than Dale would allow as his work takes precedence. All the facts that are revealed about his life are interesting. Some are sad, some shocking, some horrific and others very revealing. Dale’s life, artistic output and this film are all worthy of your investigation.

The bond between father and son can be a special one. Some are good, some not so much but the bond between son Filip Hammar (self) and father Lars Hammar (self) is extraordinary. When Filip sees his father slipping into the malaise of late life he sees himself as having to do something about it. This Swedish documentary film is a family affair and stars the real-life Hammar family, Filip, Lars and his wife Tina.

Filip and his friend Fredrik Wikingsson (self) plan an elaborate road trip to help Lars rekindle his love for life. This includes buying an old Citroen 4 car previously used in family trips and retrace the journey from Sweden to Lars’ favourite spot on earth along the coast in France. Things do not start well.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]>

After an initial reluctance to hit the road, Lars agrees but soon suffers a fall and becomes hospitalised with a broken bone. This puts the trip on hold but it eventually resumes. Due to the film being based on real people, it is filled with actual photos and video footage of the family during their younger years. This divulges information on how much Lars loved life and how much he has slipped.

The story is told in flashbacks and reproductions of moments held dear by the participants and they are very moving. The recovery of Lars is also told in small increments and this makes it much more emotionally impactful. It also makes it easier to root for his resurgence. The Last Journey is a touching examination of the love between father and son and a great example of the extraordinary moments found in even the most ordinary of lives.
