Queensland’s biggest ever immersive theatre season promises more melodrama, more laughter, and more suspense as the popular murder-mystery game leaps off the board and into one of the city’s Heritage-listed buildings.

Audience members are called upon to play the part of guests and amateur sleuths at a doomed 1930s cocktail party and must collect clues throughout the evening to solve the bloody crime.

Was it Professor Plum, in the Conservatory with the candlestick, or Miss Scarlett, in the Drawing Room with the dagger?

Brisbane Immersive Ensemble director Ben Lynskey said audiences can influence the outcome of Queensland’s largest immersive theatre experience just as much as the actors.

“Cluedo! The Interactive Game is like if Agatha Christie and Jay Gatsby threw the vintage party of the decade,” Mr Lynskey said.

“There are frights and fights, sexual tension mingling with nail-biting suspense and lavish costumes, combining with a cast of experienced actors, to provide an unforgettable night out.”

Two new cast members have joined the immersive production in 2019: UK-based stage and screen actor Tristan Teller as Reverend Green and Matilda Award-winning Colin Smith as Doctor Black, the evening’s host and eventual murder victim.

The scandalous mystery plays out in Fortitude Valley heritage gem Baedeker Wine Bar with performances from 17 April to 25 May 2019.

Brisbane Immersive artistic director Xanthe Jones said Cluedo! The Interactive Game was more than just a theatrical re-imagining of the classic board game.

“We want guests to feel like they are a VIP member of 1930s high society, so we have made sure every element works together to create an immersive world,” Ms Jones said.

“From the moment they enter the incredible venue, guests are greeted by the party’s host, Doctor Black, given a glass of delicious bubbles and integrated into the swirl of rumours and crime within the glamourous world of the socialites that make up our Cluedo characters.

“Guest are encouraged to dress the part so when they step through the doors of Baedeker and start exploring its secret passageways and grand ballrooms, they truly feel as though they are stepping back in time.”

So starts the night when Brisbane Immersive Ensemble deliver their special brand of magic and bring the popular board game Cluedo to life for some real live action. The evening begins with a room filled with merry makers along with Professor Plum, Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Dr. Black and the rest of the Cluedo cast dressed to the hilt and totally in character.

As the adult refreshments flow and the discussions climb in volume, there is suddenly a loud scream that settles a hush upon the room, a murder has been committed and it is up to us arm chair detectives to solve the crime. We separate into groups and get to work. There are interrogations to make and suspects to grill.

The night is a delicious blend of food, spirits, insane chocolates and doing your best Sherlock Holmes imitation. The Cluedo cast do a great job and no matter how hard you try, they never break character – it’s most impressive. Through applied logic and some degree of detective work, a suspect is identified and apprehended. All in all, it’s a unique and engaging night and the next time Brisbane Immersive Ensemble bring the show to town, it’s one not to be missed.

Brisbane Immersive ensemble director Ben Lynskey said this decadent restaging had a Christmas theme and included a festive feast, unlimited drinks, 1930’s jazz band and sprigs of deadly mistletoe decking the halls of the Baedeker.

“When you step through those doors, you will step back in time to another world; a lavish cocktail party in an exquisite estate with hidden passages and grand ballrooms, and hosting the cream of 1930’s high society,” Mr Lynskey said.

“You can dress up and become an entirely different person for the night, if you choose. Sure, one of your fellow dinner guests will be unmasked as a murderer, but I guarantee this is a wickedly fun night out.”

“This will be the final opportunity Brisbane’s amateur sleuths have to deduce ‘whodunnit?’ this year but we’re already plotting our return for another season of Cluedo! The Interactive Game in 2019,” Ms Jones said.

“I suspect this won’t be the last we see of the likes of Colonel Mustard, Madame Peacock and Reverend Green.”
