Essie Davis returns to the role of Phryne Fisher in the film follow up to the popular ABC television series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and not a lot has changed. Davis is still one of the best dressed sleuths on the little or big screen and her cheeky wit remains.

This time the adventure is set in the Middle East and involves Bedouin tribes and ancient curses. It also visits the English aristocrats while they drink champagne and nibble on cucumber sandwiches. There are murders and prison escapes and Miss Fisher does her best to stay one step ahead of the action.

It must be said that those expecting an expanded palate with the move to the big screen will be disappointed. The film plays out like a TV movie of the week and has incredibly average writing and next to no build up of anticipation for resolution. You see the end result of every plot twist way before it plays out.

One area that the expanded budget does pay dividends is in the location shooting. There are some impressive vistas on display. It all feels quant and harmless, something you could take the olds to without causing any friction. It just never raises the pulse with its pedestrian writing and unadventurous stance. It’s a shame they didn’t do more with what they had.

Thanks to StudioCanal we have five double in season passes to give away to Pork Pie!

Jon, a charming but out-of-luck novelist, musters the bravery needed to try and win back the love of his life by surprising her at a friend’s wedding. One problem: he’s in Auckland and the wedding is in Wellington.

After a failed attempt to make the journey south in his bomby Holden, Jon hitches a ride with Luke, a sparky young dude driving a fancy new (and, unbeknownst to Jon, stolen) yellow MINI Cooper…

Soon after, undercover vegan-activist Keira climbs through the fast food drive-through window into the MINI bound for Wellington and the Blondini gang of three are formed. As they journey south, the most epic road trip of their lives ensues.

To add to Jon’s romantic struggles, he and his two new mates become accidental outlaws on-the-run and soon have a frenzy of police and media hot in their pursuit… In cinemas May 4.

Rising star Ashleigh Cummings (Puberty Blues, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) makes her La Boite debut in this heartfelt ode to the resilience of the young.

Essie, Beth and Sid are on the cusp of adulthood at the arse-end of the world. Together in a small Queensland town they laugh, sunbathe, fight, dream and pray for some kind of future that they can’t quite picture.

The accidental death of a friend has torn apart all their assumptions about loyalty, love and life. And when a new kid comes to town with his own secrets and baggage, their fragile equilibrium faces a fresh test. Barely-healed wounds are reopened, new allegiances are formed and, finally, new futures become possible.

In Samson, La Boite’s previous Playwright-in-Residence, Julia-Rose Lewis, has a big-hearted, brutal and darkly beautiful play which offers a window into the world of young Australians today. We are delighted to be co-producing this World Premiere season with Sydney’s iconic theatre company Belvoir, under the internationally regarded direction of Kristine Landon-Smith.
