Battle Of The Sexes Movie Review

Emma Stone is quickly becoming the Meryl of her time and she is consistently outstanding in this and pretty much every film she stars in as of late. Steve Carell is also perfectly cast as the buffoonish Bobby Riggs. Using the actual audio from the original match (recorded back in 1973) really does show how ingrained the male chauvinism was at that time. The film plays out like a time capsule of the day and the attention to seventies detail is outstanding. Even including the old style ...

Check out the First Look Trailer for Battle of the Sexes

As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each were fighting more personal and complex battles. Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.   //   Directed by Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) and starring Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Silverman, Alan Cumming, ...

Cars 3 Movie Review

The use of the late actor’s sound bites from previous films is seamlessly integrated into the new edition. It shows a love and respect for that titan of the big screen that feels real. The film's message of dealing with the advancement of technology and feeling left behind by it is an interesting one given the context.   //   As always the animation looks fantastic and thankfully stays squarely in the animated world and resists the need to be photo realistic. It’s a ...

Eddie the Eagle Movie Review

It is perhaps a result of the popularity of geek chic in recent times that a movie about an athlete who goes to the Olympics and comes dead last in his event has become a commercial viability. Such a story has precedence in truth, of course, with Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, a British ski jumper that was so far behind the competitive field of his Olympic peers that he endeared himself to people the world over for simply having the guts to ‘have a go’. It must be said from the ...

The Program Movie Review

The film places a bit too much emphasis on the viewer having a working knowledge of the actual story as it introduces important characters with little or no explanation. For the uninitiated, this leads to a bit of confusion. For those familiar with the story, it’s effective film making that doesn’t slow down the pace with unneeded explanations or back-stories. Ben Foster does a good job as Armstrong even though he doesn’t look that much like him (the archive race footage comprised ...

Southpaw Movie Review

The film also provides further proof (if any more is actually needed) on how fine an actor Jake Gyllenhaal has become. His take on the lead role, that of boxer Billy Hope is absolutely mesmeric. His time in the gym and time spent training to learn the techniques of boxing have paid real dividends. Gyllenhaal fills the screen with electricity and menace and he makes the most out of what is a rather pedestrian screenplay. Sutter’s ability to plumb the depths of emotion is slight in this ...

Senna Movie Review

His career also ran parallel to the dawn of the new media age pertaining to live sport, so his life was very well documented visually, so well in fact that the film is built entirely from actual footage from his career, while a large part of the film’s dialogue comes from Senna himself. It’s a masterful job of blending archival footage, spoken snippets from Ayrton himself and comments from some media experts that knew him well. There is also family footage that nicely places the ...
