Intentionally disorienting from its opening scene. It takes you mid-film and then stretches out in both directions from there. You are introduced to a bearded and dishevelled Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), surrounded by technology that is a mystery to him. As his wits return, he discovers he is alone and on a spaceship in the outer regions of the universe.

As the non-linear storyline progresses, you discover Ryland was at one time a lowly high school science teacher during a time of an impending cataclysmic event. The Earth’s Sun is being attacked and drained of its power by an alien organism, and he is an expert in the field. His aw-shucks nature puts him at odds with the scientific community, but his innate genius causes them to begrudgingly accept him into the fold.

To comment further on the storyline would rob the viewer of the upcoming surprises and blunt the joy of discovery. The departure from the traditional hero narrative remains and reinforces the sense that there is greatness in opening your mind to the plight of others. Using Andy Weir’s 2021 science fiction novel of the same name as source material, this cinematic take stays true to Weir’s sensibilities if not his actual words.

During his tenure there, an estimated 3,000,000 victims were executed or succumbed to starvation and disease. The truly chilling aspect of the film is the focus on his home and family life and how mundane that life was outside his work. The almost complete lack of a soundtrack score (other than some electronic noise design to create unease) never lets you hide in the anonymity of a wall of sound either.

Höss and his family lived in an idyllic setting of a home and plush garden directly attached to the corner of the camp. Often the only visual clue of the location are the smoke stacks continuously belching out the smoke from the incinerators. Few connecting scenes show Höss at work but one in particular is repugnant and shocking. He stands stoically overlooking the camp while he gets enveloped in the smoke created by the burning of dead human flesh.

This is a work that will sear itself into your consciousness. Even though the film’s pace is languid and no overt violence is shown, you can remember almost every detail of every scene with crystal clarity long after the final credits roll. It is not an easy work to experience or even to digest (on many levels) but like all valid art, it is important and worthy of the attention and effort.

For the past year, Sandra (Sandra Hüller), a German writer, her French husband Samuel (Samuel Theis), and their eleven-year-old son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps.

When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he committed suicide or was killed. Samuel’s death is treated as suspicious, and Sandra becomes the main suspect.

The movie revolves around her relationship with Countess Irma Sztáray (Sandra Hüller) who started as her lady-in-waiting but became much more. The film begins after the period when Sisi gave birth to the royal children and focuses on the time she spent away from her husband on Corfu, an island off the coast of Greece.

During this separation, she was able to indulge her every whim and led a hedonist lifestyle where all those around her had to indulge her outside take on life and its responsibilities. Everyone had to abide by those esoteric wishes or they would soon be replaced. Irma was able to adhere to the dogma better than most.

Covering the last days leading up to the death of Elisabeth of Austria, Sisi & I delivers its own highly stylised version of the truth. It differs substantially from the historical account of those final events. Diversion aside there is sadness at its core as the woman who could seemingly have it all never had what she really wanted.
