Go North this Winter – the full programme has been announced for the 2024 SAXO Scandinavian Film Festival!
This year’s Festival will open with the epic historical drama THE RIOT (Sulis 1907), directed by Academy Award nominated Nils Gaup (The Last King). The film depicts the escalation of tensions leading to the Sulis uprising of mining workers in 1907 where workers struggled under inhumane conditions in dangerous, dark copper mines. This important episode in Norwegian history has never been told on screen before and portrays the origin story of the powerful Norwegian labour movement.

Spanish Film Festival 2024 – The Teacher Who Promised the Sea Movie Review
The film is based on the book Unearthing the Silence: Antoni Benaiges, the master who promises the sea by Francesc Escribano and it is a powerful indictment against unchecked power and conservative thinking. In 1935 Antoni began teaching in a small village in the province of Burgos. His unique (for the time) teaching techniques were not well received nor was his political stance, one that openly opposed Fascism.

This year’s festival Centrepiece is THE TEACHER WHO PROMISED THE SEA (El Maestro que Prometió el Mar), which recently won the Audience award at the 2024 Gaudí Awards. The acclaimed drama stars Enric Auquer (the lead from last year’s festival hit Two Many Chefs) and Laia Costa, and tells the true story of Antoni Benaiges, a teacher who brought progressive teaching methods to a small village in 1930s Burgos.
