In a picturesque village in England, Joan Stanley (Academy Award® winner Dame Judi Dench), lives in contented retirement. Then suddenly her tranquil existence is shattered as she’s shockingly arrested by MI5.

For Joan has been hiding an incredible past; she is one of the most influential spies in living history. Cambridge University in the 1930s, and the young Joan (Sophie Cookson), a demure physics student, falls intensely in love with a seductively attractive Russian saboteur, Leo. Through him, she begins to see that the world is on a knife-edge and perhaps must be saved from itself in the race to military supremacy.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

And all of them, as anyone can observe, are spectacularly comfortable in their own skin: larger than life characters whose personalities reflect the extraordinary experience of playing hundreds of characters and the great joy they’ve brought to the world. They are full of wit and wisdom with a lifetime of knowledge to share. Now they look back at key moments in their lives and careers and talk informally, sharing anecdotes, insights and memories with each other and with us.

TEA WITH THE DAMES invites you to spend time with these theatrical icons off screen as they talk about their lives now and then: their experience in theatre, TV and cinema and the memories that they have from when they were bright young things right up to the present day – now looking back with the wisdom of the years.

Tea With The Dames is in cinemas from June 7, 2018!

There is a common complaint among older moviegoers that the majority of releases today are tailored to a specific demographic and their group gets short shift. Attempting to fill that void is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It’s a British production and features a high power cast of outstanding sexagenarian thespians that includes Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Tom Wilkinson to name just a few.

It’s set in India and uses that colourful and frenetic local as an integral part of the storyline. It’s a tale of redemption amongst an older generation of Brits that are bucking against feeling like they have reached their used by dates. They end up at a hotel in India under false pretences and find that the luxury hotel the ads spoke about has been replaced by a run down complex run by Sonny (played with good humour by Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire).

The set up is somewhat conventional but what really lets the movie down is how predictable the script is. This is not helped at all by an overbearing soundtrack that telegraphs almost every salient moment in the film. The actors try as they might have little to work with other that establishing their characters eccentricities.

Films with sophistication, complex characterization and involving plot lines will always have a place up on the big screen even if they appeal to only a certain segment of the audience but when you pander to a specific group you still need to involve them regardless of age or demographics.
