The acquisition of the Kenneth Tyler Print Collection in 1973 was a defining moment in the NGA’s collecting history. Combined with a major acquisition in 2002, the Gallery consequently boasts the most comprehensive collection of post-War American art outside the United States. The collection includes over 7400 editioned prints, proofs, drawings, paper works, screens, multiples and illustrated books as well as a large collection of rare candid photography, film and audio. It directly reflects Tyler’s entrepreneurial innovation and passionate drive to collaborate with some of the twentieth century’s most brilliant artists.

Tyler was a pivotal master printer at the forefront of the American print renaissance. Having enticed major artists of the day to his print workshops on the West and then East coasts of America, Tyler orchestrated the move from printmaking as a minor artform to a leading visual practice. The ambition was to create works on a grand scale, involving ground-breaking materials and techniques, explorations of both two and three dimensions, an emphasis on papermaking, and the adoption of a wide-ranging palette.

Lichtenstein to Warhol: The Kenneth Tyler Collection will display exceptional works from the collection by major artists active in America in the post-war period in styles from Abstraction to Pop, from Minimalism to Maximalism. Artists include Josef and Anni Albers, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Sultan, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Claes Oldenburg, Nancy Graves and David Hockney.

The exhibition not only celebrates the great riches of the collection, but marks the beginning of an exciting new program that further builds on Ken Tyler and Marabeth Cohen-Tyler’s exceptional generosity of the past. The establishment of The Kenneth E Tyler AO and Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Foundation will enable the NGA to continue maintaining an ambitious dedicated publication and exhibition program, whose most recent achievements include the shows California Cool and David Hockney: prints and their respective catalogues.

The Foundation will also continue to sponsor emerging curatorial staff, and support research and access to the collection through a variety of dynamic digital platforms. Through their immense creativity and philanthropy, the Tylers have created a lasting legacy for both the NGA and Australia.

With the backdrop of 1950s New York and its burgeoning advertising industry, Adman: Warhol before pop focuses on the formative years of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. It provides surprising insights into the beginning of Warhol’s career, from his award-winning work as a commercial illustrator through to his first, little-known exhibitions.

Adman includes over 300 objects – from rare drawings and photographs to vintage advertisements, artist books and recreated department store window displays – many on public display for the first time.

This exhibition is a collaboration between the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney and The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh.

There’s also an unmissable range of programs, including a partnership with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2017 which presents a Queer Art After Hours on Wednesday 1 March and a Queer Thinking symposium.

‘Popular, witty, sexy, glamorous’ – pop art exploded onto the cultural scene in the 1960s. The pop artists rebelled against ‘high art’ to embrace the new world of advertising, television, film stars, pop music and consumerism. Pop art shocked many but inspired even more.

This summer, re-live the pop revolution as Pop to popism takes over the Gallery.

Spanning three decades from the mid 1950s to the 1980s, the exhibition traces the origins of pop art, its heady high period and its enduring legacy both in Australia and abroad. One of our most ambitious exhibitions ever, it will consume an entire Gallery floor and feature over 200 works, including masterpieces such as Roy Lichtenstein’s In the car and his first-ever comic-style painting Look Mickey, Andy Warhol’s Triple Elvis and David Hockney’s Portrait of an artist.

For the first time, Australian artists will be showcased among their international peers, with works such as Howard Arkley’s Triple fronted and Brett Whiteley’s 22-metre-long The American dream celebrating Australia’s pop art movement.

Works have come from 35 lenders around the world including the Andy Warhol Museum, Tate and the Museum of Modern Art.

Immerse yourself in the brash art and radical ideas in Pop to popism with a creative space dedicated to families, an array of programs and a pop-themed café.

Part of the Sydney International Art Series, Pop to popism is exclusive to Sydney.
