Marbin – Breaking The Cycle
Breaking The Cycle more than lives up to its name with a set of songs that are humorous, engaging, technically brilliant and awe inspiring and more times than not all those things simultaneously.
Loopy starts things out with moments of crazy guitar that’s reminiscent of a time when guitar players had more chops than taste with its wild rubbery tones and whammy bar excess. Serious Man then puts that craziness into context with its beautiful blend of ultra tasty soprano sax and superbly subtle backing.
Mom’s Song is equally gorgeous but before you drift into a mellow trance along comes Bar Stomp. This song sounds like the theme to that old black & white television show The Munsters but only if Grandpa learned how to rip on the guitar down in that lab of his.
Outdoor Revolution continues with that thematic approach but this time it’s wide-open spaces and panoramic vistas. Western Sky is just plain gorgeous with its beautiful blend of sax and subtle cymbal work, while Burning Match has that slinky thing down with serpentine playing and bold six string statements.
Claire’s Indigo is as regal as that colour and Snufkin sends the listener back to that blissful state. Old Silhouette is an enticing blend of melodious horn and acoustic and electric guitar that feels like light filtered through a silk stocking and Winds Of Grace, the longest track on the album finishes things off with a wonderful blend of instrumentation and voice that feels both organic and grand.
Marbin have the chops to blow everyone’s mind but the good taste to spread that virtuosity out over the eleven tracks here. They have a sense of humour and purpose that is rare in musicians with this much ability and Breaking The Cycle is more powerful because of it. Rob Hudson www.marbinmusic.com
